DETROIT -- An 18-year-old Detroit mother and her 23-year-old boyfriend were charged Monday in the death of a 2-year-old boy.

Tasha Martin and Joseph Taylor were charged with first-degree murder and child abuse after Detroit police said Martin's son, Isiah, died from blunt force trauma.

Police said Martin took the boy to Henry Ford Hospital Friday morning for a stomachache. Police said doctors found bruising on the boy's sides and lips.

The toddler was transferred to Detroit's Children's Hospital and died at about 6 p.m. in the intensive care unit, police said.

According to notes from the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office, "non-accidental trauma" was found on the boy's forehead, temple, sides and back.

Martin and Taylor were arrested Friday evening at their home on the 4400 block of Tireman Street. Taylor is also being charged with illegal possession of drugs and a firearm.

The two will be arraigned Tuesday in the 36th District Court at 8:30 a.m.

Police said the boy had only recently, 10 days ago, been returned to the couple after being turned over to his maternal grandmother during a police investigation into the death of the couple's 7-week-old daughter in September.

Danielle Taylor was found dead Sept. 5. Her death was ruled accidental positional asphyxiation.

Police said they will be investigating the infant girl's death again.

Toddler is second of woman’s children to die

A southwest Detroit boy who died Friday after being taken to the hospital with bruises by his mother and her boyfriend was the second of the woman’s children to die.

The couple are now in police custody and could face homicide and child abuse charges when they are arraigned Tuesday in 36th District Court in Detroit.

The 2-year-old boy had been living with his maternal grandparents until about one or two weeks ago when he was returned to his mother. The boy had been living apart from the woman since her 7-week-old girl died of suffocation last year, according to Detroit Police Cmdr. James Tolbert.

That death was ruled an accident, although police said they would take another look at that case.

"POSITIONAL ASPHYXIA" is most simply defined as death that occurs because the POSITION of a person's body interferes with respiration (breathing), and the person cannot get OUT of that position. Death occurs due to the person's inability to BREATHE anymore.

"PHYSICAL FORCEFUL-PRONE-RESTRAINT"
is defined as placing an individual's body FACE-DOWN ("prone") upon ANY surface (such as the ground, a long back board, an ambulance wheeled stretcher, a bed, or any other surface), and Restrainers physically applying pressure with their HANDS (and/or OTHER BODY PARTS) to the Victim's shoulders, posterior torso ("back"), hips, and/or upper legs – physically preventing the Victim from moving out of the PRONE position

Why is this TERMINOLOGY "important?"
When unrelated to restraint, positional asphyxia deaths are caused by the "passive entrapment" of an individual – no "person" is responsible for the Victim being unable to escape the asphyxiating position. Thus, the "manner" of death historically attributed to "positional asphyxia" has always been "ACCIDENTAL."

Since 1994, however, leading medical examiners and forensic pathologists officially recognized restraint-related forms of positional asphyxia as being quite different. Restraint asphyxia deaths are due to PEOPLE having acted to physically or mechanically entrap someone.(3-5) Thus, the "manner" of death for the majority of restraint asphyxia deaths is now recognized as "HOMICIDE."

Detroit...where the weak are beaten and killed...so sad.

I was wondering about the maternal gandmother, was she sad to let the child go fearing the worst or happy to be relieved of the responsibility? Bio-dad???

Any amount of time a child is killed by their parent after being returned is horrible but there were just 10 days!!! WTF?!? All those injuries, seems like they started the day he was returned. Why didnt they just abandon him??? If its about the money (welfare) why do these parents f'ing kill then??? Arg these people just totally piss me off for their disgusting violence. Hope they rot in hell. Bastards.

Its a really shame, Joseph just beat the living hell out of the 2 year old. I know they can be stubborn and a real pain in the neck at that age. But thats just kids and who they are.

Joseph probly killed the 7 week old because it was making to much noise. Just turned it over on its belly and held it down on the shoulders. To bad the coroner didn't look harder at the evidence. But that would be hard to see unless you were looking for it.

Drugs and the gun, kind of turns him into a thug, not the best place for the 2 year old anyways. Well any child for that matter considering there track record.

2 yr olds and 7 week olds demand alot of attention and these parents just didnt have the patience I guess for the crying and attention both need at that age.I had my son at 19 my daughter was 2 by then and I never once considered hurting them. But your right it would be so easy to smother the baby and the way they attribute alot of infant deaths with SIDS its scary.Hopefully they will be able prove it wasnt a accident and put these 2 away for a very longtime.

I also have to comment on "where the weak are beaten and killed".Its not only the weak and beaten,Detroit is back to where it was in the 60s and when the riots happened.I wasnt around at the time but my dad has told me everything about them. I live on the river you could swim from my front yard to Detroit.Yeah Detroits getting bad again and has been for awhile but not in the baby killing dept.I have to say most child deaths there are accidental from wrecks & house fires ,etc.I have been researching child murders there with a friend we have been digging through the police records of the Cass Corridor Child Murders that happened there IN 70S that are still unsolved and child murders by parent or stranger isnt a big problem there.Like most large cities there are some but not a reg thing.

Another family in Denial, At least they took good care Isaiah while he was there so I cant be hard on them.

Family defends father figure in Detroit child's death

Sitting on a sofa in the apartment on Detroit's west side where 2-year-old Isaiah Martin's toys still rest in a corner, Joseph Taylor said he has few answers. Isaiah "was a good kid, a happy kid. I can't explain what happened. I know that's what everyone wants to know," said Taylor, 43.

Isaiah, a smart little boy with big brown eyes, died Friday. Taylor's 23-year-old son, also named Joseph Taylor, and 18-year-old Tasha Martin face murder and child abuse charges in his death.

"Even though Joseph wasn't his father, he cared for him like a son," the elder Taylor said Monday at the apartment he shared with his son, Martin and Isaiah.

He said his son and Martin were still trying to cope with the loss of their 7-week-old daughter, Danielle Taylor, who died in September.

He and his daughter, Natalie Taylor, said the couple took Isaiah to Henry Ford Hospital on Friday because he had become very ill Thursday night. Isaiah had been given ginger ale and Pedialyte to help him rehydrate because he was vomiting, they said.

Isaiah was transferred to Children's Hospital of Michigan and pronounced dead Friday evening. The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office ruled that the cause of death was blunt force trauma. Isaiah was bruised and suffering from numerous injuries.

Joseph Taylor's father pointed a finger at the state Department of Human Services. A social worker had come to the apartment several times since Danielle's death, he said, but counseling and other services that he said should have been provided were not.

Isaiah had been living with his maternal grandparents after the death, but recently returned home. The Department of Human Services said it would open an investigation.

The younger Taylor had been laid off from a property-management company; Martin was trying to finish high school at West Side Academy in Detroit, said Natalie Taylor, 18.

Natalie Taylor said she finds it hard to believe her brother would have hurt Isaiah. "I've never seen Joseph whoop him," she said. And, she said, Martin only gave Isaiah "taps on the leg" to correct him.

The apartment the family shared is one of four in a red-brick building on Tireman near I-96. Natalie Taylor lives across the hall of the building's second floor.

The elder Taylor said Isaiah shared a room with his mother and the younger Taylor. The walls of the room are mostly bare; at the foot of the bed, a TV set sits in a cabinet. Isaiah's toys and a stroller were stowed in a corner of the apartment's living room Monday.

Nearby is a family photo. Martin and Taylor are each holding a child.
