Betty Sponaugle, 74, of Davis said a man entered her house, armed with a knife and wearing a ski mask around 7 a.m. while she was sleeping. She got out of bed and the man forced her to her bedroom floor and began chocking her, according to State Police.
The assailant then got a chair and duct tape and attempted to force Sponaugle into the chair and duct tape her mouth while holding a knife to her throat, according to the criminal complaint.
While this was going on, Sponaugle was able to pull the ski mask off her assailant and see that it was her grandson, 20-year-old Nicholai Sponaugle of Davis.
He then forced his grandmother to write him a $250 check and demanded that she take him to purchase a vehicle the following morning, according to police. He also demanded that she change her will to include his name.
The man said his grandmother had to meet his demands or "it's all over in a heart beat," the complaint states.
Cpl. J.R. Fletcher of the State Police arrested Nicholai Sponaugle on charges of armed robbery. He was taken to Tucker County Magistrate Court, where his bond was set at $100,000. He was being held Friday in Tygart County Regional Jail.
