GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Authorities say a teacher at a Gainesville high school has been arrested for having two loaded guns on school property.

An Alachua County deputy was sent to Eastside High School Friday morning to pick up 43-year-old Mark Stockdale and take him to the Gainesville Police Department for questioning about another incident.

While patting Stockdale down, the deputy reported finding a loaded Derringer in Stockdale's pocket. Deputies then searched Stockdale's car, which was parked in the teacher lot, and found a loaded .44 caliber revolver.

Stockdale was charged with two counts of possession of a firearm on school property. He was being held without bail awaiting a hearing scheduled for Tuesday morning.

Mark Stockdale, 43, was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of a firearm on school property. Officials said the arrest was made out of sight of any students.

Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy Peter King was sent to the high school to pick up Stockdale and take him to the Gainesville Police Department, reportedly for questioning about a weekend incident. Details about the incident were not immediately available.

King said he was following his agency’s protocol when he handcuffed Stockdale’s hand in front and asked if Stockdale had any weapons on him. Stockdale reportedly told King about a small pocket knife. While patting Stockdale down before putting him in the patrol car for the ride to the police department, King said he found a loaded Derringer in Stockdale’s pocket.

Stockdale’s car was subsequently searched in the teacher’s parking lot where deputies said they found a loaded .44 caliber revolver.

“After Mr. Stockdale was arrested, he exercised his right not to make any statements,” said sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Steve Maynard.

Stockdale was taken to the Alachua County Jail to await a Tuesday morning appearance before a judge, at which point bond would be set.
