Mother Accused Of Slitting Daughter's Wrists Charged

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. -- Detectives in Deerfield Beach are investigating an apparent attempted murder-suicide involving a woman and her young daughter.

According to police, at around 3 a.m. Monday, they received a 911 call from a man who had gotten home to find his wife, 40-year-old Silvia Garcia, had slit their daughter's wrists and then her own.

The incident happened at the family's home in the 1100 block of SW 44th Avenue. The mother was taken by ground to North Broward Medical Center. Her daughter, Sabrina, 6, was airlifted to Broward General Hospital.

Both mother and daughter were in stable condition Monday afternoon, and they are expected to survive, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Silvia Garcia has been charged with attempted murder. When she is released from the hospital, BSO said, she will be taken to the Broward County Jail and held without bail. Police said additional charges are pending.

DEERFIELD BEACH - A mother accused of slitting her young daughter's wrists and then her own early Monday morning has been charged with attempted murder, the Broward County Sheriff's Office said.

The 40-year-old woman and her daughter, age 6 or 7, are listed in stable condition at area hospitals and are expected to live, said Sheriff's Office spokesman Veda Coleman-Wright.

The woman's husband, who also is the child's father, found the two victims when he came home. He called 911 at 3:08 a.m.

Deerfield Beach Fire Rescue workers said they responded to the home, where they found the injured mother and daughter.

Although investigators have not given a motive for the incident, court records show the woman's bank threatened in August 2008 to foreclose on her home in the Waterways, a gated community east of Florida's Turnpike composed of town houses and single-family homes.

However, no further court action was taken. Her business, Sheeba's Cleaning Services, Inc., was dissolved in February 2008, records show.The mother has no previous history of child abuse, said Leslie Mann, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Children & Families.

The daughter was taken by air to Broward General Medical Center, the Sheriff's Office said.The mother was taken to North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach.

A neighbor who lives across the street from the family would not comment, saying he was too upset and did not want to cause the family further distress.

Investigators said the woman's husband found the bleeding pair after he returned from working a late shift at a restaurant.

Deputies said they found a small, blood-covered kitchen knife in the bathroom of the master bedroom where the mother was found.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the alleged attack.

But the threats from Silvia Garcia turned into tragic action as the scorned woman -- determined not to see the couple's 6-year-old daughter become apart of a new family -- slashed her own wrist and the wrist of the daughter, court records revealed.

In a search warrant filed in Broward court Thursday, Irvin Garcia led Broward sheriff's detectives to a gruesome scene in the morning hours of Feb. 9 in the family's Deerfield Beach home.

Silvia Garcia, 40, and the girl lay in a blood-covered bed in the master bedroom, both suffering from life-threatening lacerations inflicted by the mother, authorities believe.

Silvia Garcia was cut on the wrist, groin and neck area.

Her daughter was slashed on the wrist and the right femoral artery located in the child's inner thigh.

Irvin Garcia explained to authorities that he and his wife had discussed plans to get a divorce and that he had moved back into the couple's home 10 days before the incident.

He agreed to return to the home ''for his daughter's sake,'' the search warrant said.

Garcia went on to tell authorities he had told Silvia Garcia that he planned to move again, which may have triggered the suicide attempt.

Authorities had thought recent financial troubles may have spurred Garcia's actions.

Court records show Garcia was experiencing serious financial problems. Her Deerfield Beach home was threatened by foreclosure and her previous business, Sheeba's Cleaning Services, was dissolved in February 2008.
