An East Naples woman who hit her 4-year-old boy with a clothes hanger and a hammer was sent to prison for three years for torturing a child.
Judge Hardt also sentenced Veronica Gonzalez Beristain, 23, on Feb. 2 to two years of probation after her release and ordered her to take a parenting class. The judge gave her credit for 520 days served in the county jail since her arrest on March 28, 2007.
Gonzalez faced up to 30 years in prison on the first-degree felony, but was sentenced as part of a plea bargain that dropped a reckless driving charge.
Collier County Sheriff’s deputies arrested her after a woman reported that she had witnessed Gonzalez hit the boy with a clothes hanger and bite him, reports say. She told Gonzalez that if she continued to abuse the boy, she was going to call authorities.
About a half hour before calling authorities, the woman said she watched Gonzalez hit the boy in the leg with a hammer, so she told her she was calling the police.
Gonzalez took the boy and an infant and fled in a car with a man. Deputies searched the area, but arrested her when she returned to her home. They questioned the man, but he wasn’t charged. Deputies said the boy had bruises on his leg and shoulder.

Collier County sheriff’s deputies arrested a 21-year-old East Naples woman after they say she hit a 4-year-old boy with a clothes hanger and a hammer.
Around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday deputies talked to a woman who told them that in the past she had witnessed Veronica Gonzalez Beristain hit the 4-year-old with a clothes hanger and bite him, an arrest report indicates. The woman said she told Beristain that if she continued to abuse the boy, she was going to call authorities.
About a half hour before calling authorities the woman said she witnessed Beristain hit the 4-year-old in the leg with a hammer, at which time she told Beristain she was calling the police.
Beristain took the boy, along with an infant, and left the residence in a black Honda. Authorities said that 29-year-old Eulogio Javier was in the car as well.
Deputies searched the area until they were notified around 10:30 p.m. that Beristain had returned to her East Naples home. When they arrived they handcuffed Beristain and Javier and transported them to the East Naples substation for questioning.
The 4-year-old had a bruises on his leg and shoulder, authorities said.
Beristain was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse reports show. She was booked into the Naples Jail Center. Beristain’s address is not listed on an arrest report.
