A 19-year-old Dickinson Township man is in Cumberland County Prison, charged by state police with fatally beating an 88-year-old neighbor during a burglary at her Torway Road home late Saturday.

Colton M. Hardy is charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, criminal trespass and theft in connection with the death of Ethel Weaver, according to arrest papers filed with District Judge Vivian Cohick. The accused is being held without bail.

Weaver's death was "stupid, senseless and brutal," Cumberland County District Attorney David Freed said.

Weaver's daughter found her body around 7 a.m. Sunday, police said. Ethel Weaver's blue Mercury Sable was missing from her property in the 700 block of Torway Road, they said.

Police said they found the car on Sunday in Adams County. Inside, they said, was a black glove with blood inside it.

In arrest documents, Trooper Kenneth Tallman said Hardy told police that he had broken into Weaver's house around 10 p.m. Saturday by forcing open an unlocked window. Hardy said he intended to steal only Weaver's car, the trooper said.

The affidavit does not state that Hardy admitted to killing Weaver. Tallman said Hardy told him that he saw that Weaver had been beaten and that the blood found on the glove in the car resulted from the assault.

Hardy said he stole Weaver's car and drove around for hours before abandoning it near his home, Tallman said. Tallman said Hardy told him he had acted alone.

Colton Hardy broke into Ethel Weaver's house Saturday night, beat her to death and stole her Mercury Sable, police said. Hardy drove around for several hours in Weaver's car.

Weaver's daughter found her inside her home on Torway Road in Dickinson Township Sunday morning.

Police called Hardy a coward.

Weaver's car was discovered near Hardy's home, police said.

When police questioned Hardy, he told them that he remembered Weaver had suffered a beating, according to court documents.

A pair of bloody gloves was found inside the car, police said.

Two weeks ago, Hardy entered Weaver's home and helped himself to a glass of water, police said. The incident made Weaver and her family a little nervous about Hardy.

Hardy injured his right hand when he allegedly beat Weaver.

The cops are right. Hardy IS a coward. And soon to be someone's nice little wifey in prison.

I hope he packed his lube.

Glad they caught him quickly. I hope he doesn't spend another day as a free man.
