UNION COUNTY, S.C. -- The boyfriend of a 31-year-old nurse whose remains were found months after she disappeared has been charged in her death.

Jamel Good, 28, is charged with murder in the death of Maria Fernandez.

An arrest affidavit says that Good admitted that he last saw Maria at the house they shared on Sept. 3. A neighbor reported hearing gunshots from the home on Blue Ridge Road early in the evening on that same day.

Fernandez was never seen alive after Sept. 3. A utility worker looking for fallen lines found Fernandez’s remains in January in a wooded area off High Point Road near Herbert Road in Union County. She was identified through dental records.

Fernandez has a 5-year-old son. Good is the boy’s father.

Union County and State Law Enforcement Division investigators announced the arrest. Family, friends and co-workers of the popular nurse packed the news conference.

Investigators have not yet said how Fernandez died. They also did not say what evidence led them to arrest Good, but they did say a signal from Good’s cell phone placed him in the area where the remains were found.

Good is being held in the Union County Detention Center.

A group of people from Atlanta who believe a murder suspect has been profiled and imprisoned unjustly in Union faced off against the family and friends of his alleged victim on Friday.

On Thursday, the Coalition for the Peoples' Agenda, a group that members describe as being a criminal justice committee, met with the solicitor to complain that Good is a victim of racial profiling and has been held unfairly. They said they were unsatisfied with the solicitor's response, so they staged a protest on Friday morning.

"There is no specific evidence pointing at him and there was DNA pointing at someone else," said Sam Madison of the Coalition for the Peoples' Agenda. "We're insisting Jamel Good be given his eighth amendment rights and be allowed bail and that's not happening."

Good's supporters call it a case of racial profiling.

Dozens of family members and friends of Fernandez gathered on the opposite side of the street.

WYFF News 4's Mike McCormick was at the protest, and said that Fernandez's mother screamed "justice for Maria" until she became so emotional that family members took her away from the street.

"You got a lot of people over there speaking on something they don't really know, or something somebody else told them but we know the facts," said Travis Fernandez, Maria's brother.

The 16th Circuit Solicitor, Kevin Brackett, released a statement to WYFF News4 in response to the rally. Part of it reads, "While we understand why the family and friends of Mr. Good would want to take to the streets to protest his innocence and demand his release, we believe that Mr. Good's fate should be decided by a jury of his peers, not a jury of his pals.

A man who worked with Good told investigators that while he was driving with Good on the night of Fernandez’s disappearance, he heard a noise coming from the trunk. He said Good pulled over and went to the trunk and banged something against the side of the car. Investigators later found the face plate of Fernandez’s phone where the car had been stopped.

Investigators said that when they checked Good’s car, it smelled like cleaning chemicals and the carpet from the trunk had been removed. They also said that they found a specific type of grass in the undercarriage of Good’s car that grows in the area where Fernandez’s body was found in January.

Good’s attorney, Doug Brannon, said that his client has an airtight alibi. He says Good was at Fernandez’s brother’s house doing work on it on the night that his girlfriend disappeared.And back in March:
