PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- A Pittsfield woman is facing a murder charge for allegedly stabbing her husband to death.

Prosecutors said Charlene Martin is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday in Central Berkshire District Court in connection with the death of Arthur Martin.

The Berkshire Eagle reported that officers were called to the couple's apartment late Friday night where they found Arthur Martin, 49, suffering from a stab wound to the leg. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead early Saturday morning.

The medical examiner determined that he bled to death as a result of a stab wound to the thigh that severed the femoral artery.

PITTSFIELD — Friends and relatives continued to show their support Monday for Charlene Grandson Martin, who is accused of stabbing her husband to death.

About 20 supporters of the 45-year-old Pittsfield woman filled the spectator's area in District Court for her pre-trial hearing Monday, wearing white T-shirts with "Free Charlene" printed on the front and "We Love You" on the back.

As Grandson Martin was led out of the courtroom, she raised her handcuffed hands and waved to her supporters, many of whom responded by saying "I love you."

Grandson Martin is accused of killing her husband, 49-year-old Arthur Martin, in their Riverview Homes apartment on Feb. 6.

Grandson told police the couple were "joking around," and "somehow he got stabbed."

Arthur Martin was stabbed in his upper left thigh. The knife severed or lacerated his femoral artery — a major blood vessel that starts in the lower abdomen and leads into the thigh — according to a preliminary police report.

On Monday, Assistant District Attorney Kelly Mulcahy Kemp said her office plans to present the evidence against Grandson Martin to a Berkshire County grand jury.

At defense attorney Nathaniel Greene's request, the court scheduled a probable-cause hearing for April 10. If the grand jury doesn't return an indictment against Grandson Martin, Greene can use the probable-cause hearing to argue whether his client should continue to be held in custody.

During her arraignment Feb. 9, Grandson Martin pleaded not guilty to one count of murder as her supporters packed the courtroom.

After the arraignment, Grandson Martin was held without the right to bail without prejudice, meaning the matter could be argued at a later date. If Grandson Martin is indicted, she will be arraigned in Berkshire Superior Court, and another bail hearing will take place.

According to a police report, Grandson Martin and her husband had "a documented history of domestic troubles" between them.

The maximum penalty for murder in Massachusetts is life without parole.

I do! It happens all the time on TV. Someone gets sliced in the leg and they have to get something tied around it before they bleed out. It is always very suspenseful.

I don't know where that specific spot is that has the ever-important artery but I'm not taking any chances. I still have a belt tightened around my thigh because I stubbed my toe last week and it bled like crazy. How purple should my leg turn before I take it off? It's a lovely shade at the moment... matches my Vikings jersey.

PITTSFIELD — The murder charge against a city woman accused of killing her husband last month has been reduced to manslaughter.

A Berkshire grand jury last week indicted Charlene Grandson Martin, 45, of West Street, on a single charge of manslaughter, significantly changing the potential outcome of her case — from a possible life sentence to a maximum 20 years behind bars.

Grandson Martin was arraigned on a murder charge in Central Berkshire District Court after her arrest in connection with the Feb. 7 death of her husband, Arthur Martin, 49, who died from a stab wound allegedly inflicted by the woman.

Grandson Martin has consistently maintained that her husband, who bled to death from his wound, was accidentally injured while the couple was fooling around with a knife. Her supporters have proclaimed her innocence and recently turned out for a pretrial hearing wearing "Free Charlene" T-shirts.

District Court does not have final jurisdiction on murder cases, which are presented to a grand jury for possible indictment before getting bumped up to Berkshire Superior Court.

The grand jury, whose proceedings are closed to the public, instead handed up a manslaughter indictment after jurors apparently found insufficient evidence to support a murder charge.

They have a history of domestic troubles but were just joking around with a knife? How ludicrous. She'd have a better chance of convincing me that it was in self-defense.
