Terry Vanderbilt, 62, is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail and also faces charges of aggravated assault, weapon possession and resisting arrest after police found him astride his 59-year-old wife, Anna Vanderbilt, of the couple's Orben Drive home, stabbing her with the wooden-handled ice pick.
The victim called 911 at 2:16 a.m. Sunday. As police arrived, they could hear the woman screaming for help. Through a window, Sgt. William Lowry and Patrolman Dennis McCoach saw her on the floor as her husband straddled her and stabbed her with the pick. The officers broken into the home and struggled with the husband, who was subdued and arrested.
Mrs. Vanderbilt was flown to Morristown Memorial Hospital, where she underwent surgery and is listed in stable condition.
"I commend Sergeant William Lowry and Patrolman Dennis McCoach for the prompt response and entry into this residence averting what could have been a very tragic outcome," Morris County Prosecutor Robert A. Bianchi said. "These officers in all likelihood saved the victim’s life."
Mount Arlington Police Chief Richard Peterson also commended his officers as "true professionals."
"They are a credit to the Mt. Arlington Police Department and the residents that we serve. I am extremely proud of the manner in which they handled this incident," he said.
