36-year-old Lakeland woman was arrested this week and charged with aggravated child abuse after admitting to investigators that she injuried her 1-month-baby boy, Polk County Sheriff's Office officials said.
Carmen Cardenas told investigators that she snaped on at least two occasions because the baby would not stop crying.
The sheriff's office said in a statement that on Wednesday "Cardenas said she became angry, grabbed the baby, and swung him, striking his head on the crib. Cardenas also admitted to removing the crying baby from his crib on a separate occasion two weeks earlier, and dropping him on the top rail."
The baby sustained bruises, a skull fracture and a cut, the statement said. The injuries were discovered after Cardenas and her husband took the boy to Bartow Regional Medical Center, which had the boy airlifted to St. Joseph's Children's Hospital in Tampa.
He was in critical but stable condition at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital.
"The medical staff at St. Joseph's evaluated the infant and advised PCSO detectives that the baby boy had suffered a bruise to the back of the head, a bruise to the right side of his forehead above his eye, a fracture to the right side of his skull above his ear, two bruises on the front of his body above his groin, and a cut on his genitals,'' the statement said.
Cardenas is being held on $500,000 bond in the Polk County Jail.

Carmen Cardenas, 36, of Lakeland, was arrested on felony charges of aggravated child abuse.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Cardenas called her husband on Wednesday and told him that the baby was breathing erratically. She asked her husband to take her and the baby to the hospital, an affidavit said.
The infant was taken to Bartow Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to St. Joseph's Children's Hospital in Tampa because of the severity of his injuries, deputies said.
The medical staff at St. Joseph's said the baby had a bruise to the back of the head, a bruise to the right side of his forehead above his eye, a fracture to the right side of his skull above his ear, two bruises on the front of his body above his groin, and a cut on his genitals.
Cardenas' husband told detectives that he suspected that his wife was abusing the baby but did not see enough evidence to confront her, deputies said.
Deputies said that during an interview Cardenas told detectives that the baby "would not stop crying,", so she swung him around, striking his head on the crib. She also admitted to removing the crying baby from his crib two weeks earlier and dropping him on the top rail, deputies said.
Cardenas was arrested and booked into the Polk County Jail.
The child's condition was not released.
