Police: Boy, 2, Dies After Being Thrown Into Couch

ANNAPOLIS -- Police said Friday that a man is charged with first-degree murder after a 2-year-old boy was thrown into a couch.

William Warren Boyd, 36, is also charged with child abuse, assault and reckless endangerment.

The Annapolis Police Department said crews were called to a home in the 400 block of Captain's Circle on Dec. 7. The investigation revealed that Boyd, the boyfriend of the victim's aunt, "threw the child into a couch," according to a statement from police.

The boy, Cyrus Besche, was unconscious when taken to a local hospital, and he died Dec. 10 at Johns Hopkins Children's Center.

The medical examiner's office ruled this week that the death was a homicide.

Boyd is being held at Anne Arundel County Detention Center without bail.

Annapolis Police arrested 36-year-old William Boyd on Thursday. He is charged with first-degree murder, child abuse and assault.

Police say Boyd threw 2-year-old Cyrus Besche against a couch at a home in the 400 block of Captain's Circle on Dec. 7. Authorities say Boyd had been dating the child's aunt.

Police say the child was unconscious when taken to the hospital and died three days later. The state medical examiner on Wednesday ruled the boy's death a homicide.

Boyd was already being held at the Anne Arundel County Detention Center on unrelated charges when he was charged Thursday in the slaying.

William Warren Boyd, 36, of Glenwood Street, was charged with first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, child abuse and reckless endangerment, according to online court records. He is being held without bond at the Jennifer Road Detention Center. He was arrested at the detention center, where he was being held for violating his probation on a 2005 burglary conviction, police said.

Emergency responders were called to the 400 block of Captains Circle at 5:45 p.m. Dec. 7 for the report of an unconscious child. They took the boy, Cyrus Besche, to Anne Arundel Medical Center and later transferred him to Johns Hopkins Children's Center. Cyrus died Dec. 10, and this week the medical examiner determined that his death was a homicide.

Mr. Boyd was arrested last night, said Jane Schlegel, city Police Department spokesman.

"Investigation revealed that the suspect had thrown Cyrus Besche into a couch causing him to fall unconscious," Mrs. Schlegel said.

Cyrus was in the care of his aunt, and Mr. Boyd is the aunt's boyfriend, she said. Mr. Boyd has numerous criminal convictions for theft, mainly in the 1990s, but no violent criminal convictions, according to online court records.

Cyrus was born May 12, 2006, to Crystal A. Ferron, 19 and Tyler P. Besche. He lived in Annapolis, according to his obituary.

Hmm, thats one hell of a couch... did he bounce off? No cushioning on the couch? I can't fathom a child dying from that unless there's a bit more to it :dong: I reme, ber jumping on my parent's friends house like a little idiot & careening off & bashing my head off the coffee table at about 3-4 yrs old. I got a nasty bump, and a really sore head, oh and a mom who wouldn't let me near coffee tables or couches for a while... but no dying :/

I would imagine it was one of thoughs couches that had the big wooden hand rails on the sides or wooden backs. Other wise I am with you and cant think of how he could be injured from that.

A 37-year-old Annapolis man was sentenced Monday to 15 years in prison for the second-degree murder of his wife's nephew after the toddler died of head injuries while he was baby-sitting.

"I don't know what sentence would adequately match this offense, but 15 years doesn't do it," Anne Arundel County Circuit Court Judge J. Michael Wachs said, as he went along with the agreement prosecutors made with the defense because of witness and proof problems with their case.
[...]
The victim's family wept as Alban recounted sad events leading to Cyrus' death. In his fourth statement to police, Boyd said he whirled the child around and let go so Cyrus would land on a sofa, repeating it up to 20 times. But during the last few times, Cyrus didn't get up. The final time he was flung, his head smacked the floor, and he seemed to be asleep. Alban said Boyd's behavior showed "a certain amount of maliciousness."

In a statement read to the judge, Crystal Ferron, Cyrus' mother, wrote that "I hate knowing that life just goes on every single day but my baby boy's life does not. I just feel so empty all the time, when Cyrus' life was taken my life was taken too."

Boyd admitted that Anne Arundel County prosecutors had evidence to convict him of second-degree murder but did not plead guilty. Assistant Public Defender Karl Gordon said Boyd was drunk as he baby-sat while his wife and her sister went shopping, and had inadvertently gotten an electric shock that day. Gordon said defense experts would have testified that Cyrus' injury could have been accidental.

I'll admit to being more than a bit ignorant in the possibility of some objects as fatal weapons. I had never even considered the couch.

I'm expecting, perhaps, that he didn't throw him into the cushioned bit. I always figured children are fairly durable, and could at least withstand that. I certainly took worse damage bouncing on a trampoline, or failing to do so at least, than I'd imagine cushions causing.

Stick around. You'll see the couch as the culprit in all sorts of stories. The appear to be so dangerous that I'm considering getting rid of mine.

I would never leave my child with a person who looks like a mean motherfucker.

So sorry little Cyrus, you deserved a fair chance at life.

I'll admit to being one of the least paternal people you'd likely meet. I generally dislike kids, particularly younger ones that haven't really developed a sense of others' needs and rationalization.

That said, even I feel a protective urge when I read this. Frankly, the kid isn't mine, I don't know him, and I'd generally say it's not my problem. However, in this case there'd have been no wedding. I'd have slammed his head into the window sill until it cracked like an egg.

I abhor fighting, but all fights should be fair.

You know at first I read "Thrown onto the couch" and I was totally confused.... I was like... damn Nadezdha is always thrown onto the couch, the bed, whatever and never got hurt... wtf...

Then I read further "Against the couch" and the Aunt married the murderer. She needs to die too.

MCI or RCI? Either way, they aren't fond of baby killers. He'll get his. My mother, stepfather and grandfather are/were all retirees. I used to hear about it often.

The final time he was flung, his head smacked the floor, and he seemed to be asleep. Alban said Boyd's behavior showed "a certain amount of maliciousness."

So, he was whirling the kid and letting him land on the couch. The action described sounds like play -- the kind my kids think is fabulous. They asked again and again to do this kind of thing. So, was Boyd 'playing' with Cyrus? If so, he apparently didn't have the common sense to stop when Cyrus couldn't get up and would obviously have stopped asking to be thrown. If this was Boyd's idea of punishment, I think there is a g-force ride or two around that could be used on him. Or better yet, maybe a counterweight trebuchet.
