As a veteran bartender at two French Quarter taverns, Wendy Byrne had become a familiar personality in the historic district.

But life for the witty and amiable 39-year-old was about to change: She was engaged to be married, and was planning a move to Georgia with her fiance as she hunted for a wedding dress, according to friends.

Those plans were shattered Saturday night when Byrne was shot to death at the intersection of Dauphine and Gov. Nicholls streets during an apparent robbery attempt by teenage boys.

I hope they are convicted of second-degree murder so they will never have a single day of freedom. What a shame they robbed Wendy Byrne of her life.

An Orleans Parish grand jury today indicted two teenage boys in the second-degree murder of bartender Wendy Byrne, who was fatally shot while walking with a friend in the French Quarter in January.

Reggie Douglas, 16, and Drey Lewis, 15, remain in Orleans Parish Prison awaiting trial for allegedly taking part in the robbery that left Byrne with a bullet in her back at about 8 p.m. Jan. 17. She died later at a local hospital, remembered by friends here as a gregarious, warm presence at two Quarter bars.

Second-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole upon conviction.

Bond was set at $500,000 apiece for Douglas and Lewis, who were both 15 at the time of the killing. Douglas turned 16 while in jail.

A third teen, Ernest Cloud, 14, was also booked with the murder. But he remains in the juvenile system awaiting a hearing to determine whether he should be tried as an adult.

Since Douglas and Lewis were 15 at the time of arrest, prosecutors were able to quickly transfer their cases from juvenile court to Criminal District Court.

Cloud was recently deemed incompetent to proceed in juvenile court, but after about one week of tutoring by the state Department of Health and Hospitals, Judge Mark Doherty found the boy capable of understanding the basics of the court system.

Cloud remains locked up at a juvenile detention center. He is scheduled for an appearance in juvenile court June 19, according to his lawyer, Shawn Deggins.
