SYLMAR - She was like a mom to her mobile-home park, inviting neighbors over for fried chicken, mashed potatoes and corn on the cob.
Her son was the neighborhood bully with a quick temper, poised to explode at any hint of provocation.
After midnight Wednesday, police said, 29-year-old Erik Christian Vandenandel blew up at home, bludgeoning his mother with a baseball bat. Sheila Vandenandel, 65, was found dead at the scene.
"She was beaten to death inside of her residence," said Officer April Harding, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department. "He used an aluminum bat. There was some kind of dispute that erupted.
"When the officers showed up, they were met by her son. ... During an investigation, we determined that the son was responsible."
The younger Vandenandel was arrested on suspicion of murder and jailed in lieu of $1million bail.
