Police step up patrols after bus stop robberies

David MacAnally/Eyewitness News

Indianapolis - Metro Police will increase patrols at bus stops starting Friday morning. Officers say the suspects pulled guns on the students and threatened to shoot them at four different bus stops on the northeast side Thursday morning.

City and school police will be patrolling school bus stops, and citizens can also do their part.

The suspects hit several bus stops Thursday, displaying a gun and demanding whatever valuables the middle and high school students had on them. In one case one suspect pistol-whipped a male student in the mouth. In total, police believe there were six young victims of the same suspects.

The robberies happened as the students waited for their buses on the city's northeast side. At 42nd and Ridgeview, a suspect took a girl's lunch money, pulled a gun on her and tried to make her get into his car.

Within minutes police got three calls of students held up at bus stops. The victims were aged 12 through 18. In every case, the victims reported the same suspects in a silver Dodge Intrepid.

"The car backed up on me and the two guys jumped out on me. He's like, 'Give me your bag, what are you listening to?'" said an 18-year-old victim. The robbers smashed his CD and stole his MP3 player, then "He took the handle part and swung it like that." The male student needed nine stitches.

Still, he and his mother consider themselves blessed. "They could have just rolled up and shot him so I'm just glad he's here," she said.

Most of the students attend charter schools. One is from Warren Township.

Police are seeking suspect Erik Edwards, also wanted for a string of pay day loan store holdups.

The robberies have parents on the watch.

"I'll be waiting longer with him, yes. Make sure he's safe," said one parent.

Another woman picked her younger brother up from school so he wouldn't have to ride the bus.

"If she tells me to be on the bus stop with my granddaughter I'm going to be on the bus stop - for her safety," said Odell Robinson, grandfather.

Mayor Greg Ballard visited KIPS Academy, one of the charter schools whose students were held up. He told them safety for students on the streets is a top priority.

Call Crimestoppers at 262-TIPS if you have information on the suspects.

NDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Metro police have released the name of another person wanted for questioning in several bus stop robberies that occurred Thursday morning. Metro police said three men targeted students as they waited for their buses. There were four robberies in all and one student was even pistol whipped.

It?s usually dark this time year when Stanley Simmons, 18, walks to his bus stop early in the morning. He said he was listening to music with his headphones on and reached in his bag to try to change the music when the robber approached him.

"I looked back up and then he was like, give me your stuff,? said Simmons.

Three men robbed Stanley in the 3900 block of Bolton Avenue. They stole everything he was carrying and then pistol whipped him, causing him to collapse on the ground. Now has nine stitches in his face.

"I?m feeling like, 'Am I dying? Are you serious, this is happening?' And I'm thinking that I'm dreaming, but it's real life,? said Simmons. "My whole face is like boom, boom. It feels like my heart is in my face.?

Metro police said the same three men are responsible for three other school bus stop robberies in the 38th and Arlington Avenue area. Police want to question 23-year-old Eric Edwards and his wife, 29-year-old Tamara Edwards, also known as Tamara Bates. Eric Edwards is also wanted for robbing a Pay Day loans store earlier this week.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard is adding extra resources on the street in response to the robberies. Mayor Ballard checked on the students at school.

"No one is going to mess with the school children in this city, no one. We are going to put all the resources of the police department, and if anybody tries to do that, in the future, all the resources are going to come down on them,? said Ballard.

Police said the suspect vehicle is a 1999 gray Dodge Intrepid. It has a paper plate number: L452284. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.

Police said there will be an increased police presence Friday morning.

Indianapolis police arrested a 17-year-old boy in connection with a string of robberies at school bus stops last month.

Cameron Johnson was arrested on Tuesday in connection with two of the robberies of at least a dozen students at three bus stops on Indianapolis' east and northeast sides early Jan. 22, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported.

One boy was pistol-whipped during the robberies, while other students had their lunch money, mp3 players and other electronic devices taken, police said.

Two of the students identified Johnson as the person who pointed a gun at them, police said. Johnson is accused of stealing one boy's sneakers, backpack and wallet, along with $2 from a girl's backpack.

Police said they are still looking for two other suspects.

A police source had told 6News on Friday evening that detectives had detained and were questioning several people in connection the robberies. Sgt. Paul Thompson said Monday that those individuals had been arrested on unrelated charges.

Earlier, police had circulated the names and pictures of Eric Edwards, 23, and his wife, Tamara Edwards, 29, in connection with the robberies, but both were cleared last week
