A mother is facing child abuse charges for allegedly throwing her 3-week-old baby across her living room, the Jefferson Parish sheriff said Wednesday.

Shannon N. Cooper, 21, of Metairie, was arrested Tuesday, Sheriff Newell Normand said.Detectives said Cooper was frustrated that her infant son would not stop crying, and on two different occasions, she threw him across the floor of her apartment.

On Jan. 12, Cooper took her son to the hospital, where she told emergency room staff that the baby had fallen off the couch, the sheriff said.

Cooper faces two counts of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile. The infant and Cooper's other child, a 13-month-old girl, have been placed in protective custody.

Yeah, because throwing a newborn is a great way to settle them down. Whatever. She probably abused the toddler, too. I hope she doesn't get them back.

METAIRIE, La. - A 21-year-old mother has been arrested on charges of cruelty to a juvenile after deputies said she admitted to throwing her infant son across the room, causing severe injuries.

Sheriff Newell Normand announced the arrest of Shannon N. Cooper of Edenborn Avenue in Metairie.

According to Normand, detective Solomon Burke was following up on a child abuse case when he learned that a three-week-old child had been brought into an emergency room on January 12 and that Cooper had said the child had fallen off the couch.

Normand said that during a second interview by Burke, Cooper admitted that on two occasions she had gotten frustrated with her child crying and threw him across the room. On both occasions, Cooper said the injuries required immediate medical attention and she took him to the hospital.

She was arrested on two counts of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.

The baby, along with a 13-month-old sister, have been placed in protective custody.

Metairie, Louisiana (The Weekly Vice) -- Shannon N. Cooper, a 21-year-old Louisiana woman was arrested Tuesday after fracturing her 3-week-old son's skull twice by throwing the child across the room.

According to the Parish County Sheriff's Office, deputies first learned about the abuse after staff from Ochsner Medical Center contacted them last Thursday about a newborn boy that was in intensive care.

The child was rushed by ambulance to the hospital's pediatric intensive care unit after the child's grandmother called 911. The grandmother told authorities that the child had fallen off a sofa and hit a wooden coffee table, according to the arrest report.

Doctors however told authorities that the child had suffered two skull fractures, resulting in internal bleeding at two different locations. Doctors told police the evidence suggested that the two injuries occurred at two "distinctly separate times" because the injuries were at different stages of healing.

Investigators say Burke admitted to throwing the child across the room on two occasions because she was frustrated that the child wouldn't stop crying. She said the incidents occurred within a few days of each other.

Cooper was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center on two counts of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile. No bond has yet been established.

Cooper's son and 13-month-old daughter are both currently in protective custody, according to the sheriff's office.

But doctors who treated the child told Burke they found two skull fractures and two places with evidence of bleeding in his brain, the arrest report said. Doctors also informed Burke that the injuries showed signs of having occurred at two "distinctly separate times" and were healing at different rates.

Burke questioned Cooper at the Sheriff's Office investigations bureau in Harvey where she gave a statement admitting that she threw the child on two separate occasions because she was frustrated with his constant crying, the arrest report said. Cooper told Burke that during the first incident, she threw the child about 6 feet across the living room and onto the floor.

The two incidents occurred within a few days of one another.

Ok, if she got medical treatment for him both times, how did they miss the skull fracture the first time around? Am I missing something here?

I hope someone else steps up for those kids. She doesn't deserve them. Breeder.

The first time he was crying she throws him, I bet he didn't stop crying. The second time she throws him due to his constant crying, I bet he was constantly crying from the first throwing incident. This poor baby was no doubt in pain and she fucking throws him a second time, with out thought care of having hurt him the first time. Now the the little one is in intensive care...you are no mother.

She doesn't deserve a child, much less two. I hope she never gets them back...

Heal completely little one. I hope both you and your sister find a loving home to thrive in.

Hmm, it does say she took him to get medical attention...that is a good point. How could a skull fracture be overlooked? I would think the baby was in a good deal of pain from the first assault.

Perhaps she used the same excuse twice? Maybe that's what really alerted medical personnel that something was not quite kosher? Or, she blamed THIS problem on the LAST time - but they discovered a SECOND fracture, blowing her theory/excuse out of the water?

Either way --- die bitch, die!

Hope the kids stay together and find a wonderful, loving home.

Now the baby will probably end up with some physical and cognitive problems.
Brain damage, and like that, what a way to grow up in this world that takes everything you've got to survive. At the hands of the mother!!

Maybe he lost consciousness the first time she threw him and she thought he went to sleep. She noticed how wonderfully well that method of putting the baby to sleep worked so she tried it again. No doubt, the entire time she was probably thinking 'If I have to throw this baby one more time I'm going to feed him to the bathtub'.

Maybe the nice ladies in prison will teach her new and fun ways to go to sleep!
