A woman has been accused of torture in connection with the death of her 3-year-old stepdaughter, Stockton police said.

Maria Bettancourt, 38, was booked into jail late Tuesday on suspicion of torture, child abuse, child abuse resulting in death and corporal injury to a child, records show. The girl was taken to San Joaquin General Hospital at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, Officer Pete Smith said. She was pronounced dead at the hospital about four hours later.

Doctors told detectives the girl had obvious signs of trauma, Smith added. An autopsy determined that trauma was the cause of death.

Police said earlier in the day that the girl's parents, who were questioned by officials, were cooperating with the investigation. The family lives in the 800 block of South Golden Gate Avenue.

Police said a 16-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man also lived at the house.

The girl had two sisters, ages 5 and 15. It's unknown if the other girls lived with their 3-year-old sister.

Police have not released the name of the girl.

Please keep us updated on this. What did she do to her and WHY didn't any other household members stop it? Will they be charged as well?

'Fucking ugly bitch was probably jealous cuz that baby was prettier, slimmer and got more attention than this butt ugly murderess!

Rest with the angels, precious one.

This is so sad. Is it just me or does every one of these crazy psycho baby beaters get uglier and uglier! It's like, you know they are ugly on the inside because of what they did to a child and their outward apprearance reflects that 100 percent and then some! *shudders*

RIP baby girl.

Alberto Correa the bio-dad of Guadalupe and the boyfriend of Maria Bettancourt is on the run and has disappeared. I hope they find his ass were ever he is and prosecute anyone who is helping him.

STOCKTON, Calif. -- The brokenhearted family of an alleged torture victim is being blocked from burying the child.

The 3-year-old girl, identified by the family as Guadalupe Correa, was taken to San Joaquin General Hospital at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday and was pronounced dead about four hours later.

Maria Bettancourt, 38, was booked into jail late Tuesday on suspicion of torture, child abuse, child abuse resulting in death and corporal injury to a child, records show Bettancourt is the girlfriend of the child's father, Alberto Correa, according to family members.

Relatives told KCRA 3 that Alberto Correa, who had custody of Guadalupe Correa and in whose care she died, has disappeared.

"We are wondering if there is something we can do to get this baby because we need closure, she has a lot of brothers and sisters," the girl's grandmother, Victoria Torres, said.

An autopsy determined that trauma was the cause of the girl's death.

Daniel Hurtado, who raised Guadalupe from a baby and is the foster father to her other two sisters but was forced to give up the child to her natural father, said he saw the signs of abuse and contacted child protective services.

Jessica Torres, who identified herself as Guadalupe's mother, said she hasn't even seen her daughter since the tragedy.

County child protective services said it cannot comment on abuse allegations because of confidentiality rules.

Betancourt could be arraigned Thursday.

Officer Pete Smith, a Police Department spokesman, said that about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, the girl's father took her to a Stockton hospital. She was still alive but had "obvious signs of trauma," Smith said.

Her heart stopped about 7:20 a.m., and she was pronounced dead

STOCKTON - The last time Jessica Torres saw her daughter alive was Dec. 27 during a visit to the home where Guadalupe Correa, 3, lived with her father and his girlfriend.

On that day, as Torres was preparing to leave, Guadalupe whispered to her that she wanted to leave with her. "I could see my baby was terrified," Torres said.

Torres, her family and the large, improvised family that cared for Guadalupe for years want justice, but they also want to know what social services agencies were doing to protect her.

"There were signs all over," said Pebbles Torres, 47, one of Guadalupe's aunts. "I can't believe they didn't do anything."

Jessica Torres was going through a tough time, moving from motel to motel, when she decided to surrender Guadalupe to the care of Daniel Hurtado. The father of two of Jessica Torres' other children, Hurtado, 48, had raised a family of his own and could provide Guadalupe with a stable family. He is also the foster father of two of Guadalupe's older sisters.

Hurtado cared for Guadalupe until last summer, when a social worker told him that she would be placed in the custody of her biological father.

"They said the father wanted her back, but I didn't want to give her back," Hurtado said.

Hurtado said he was concerned that Guadalupe wouldn't be safe in the home. Once she left, Hurtado noticed a change in her demeanor. Once playful, she became reserved. She often showed up at his house on visits with bumps and bruises. He reported this to the case worker assigned to Guadalupe, but nothing ever came of it, he said.

"They were quick to take her out of a nice home, but not out of a dangerous one," said Josie Yciano, 22, who is engaged to Hurtado's son.

San Joaquin County Children's Services Deputy Director David Erb declined to answer questions about Guadalupe's case, citing state law that grants the agency a five-day window for providing basic information about a child's case to the public.

Officer Pete Smith, a spokesman for the Stockton Police Department, said Guadalupe's father, Alberto Correa, is not a suspect and has been cooperating with investigators.

She was hospitalized about a month ago. CPS was called and was asked to PLEASE check on her. They went to the hospital, but they sent her rigth back. When CPS saw her that day in the hospital she had physical evidence of abuse but yet they sent her home. Her step mom shaved her her, made her eat her own pieces, called her names and gave her a black eye. YES, her father knew exactly what the step mother was doing to her. Yet he did nothing about it!!!!

"obvious signs of trauma". That quote doesn't even begin to describe what that little girl went through. She was brought into the ER yesterday and the things that they had done to her....my god, it was awful. Her stepmother and father should rot in hell. I am so sickened by how they treated her. Rest in peace little angel, my prayers go out to you. My heart breaks for you.

(You know its got to be real damn bad if you make a Er nuse sick. Poor little Guadalupe.)

Still no sign of Alberto Correa (Guadalupe's bio-daddy) he is still on the lamb.

STOCKTON, Calif. -- A Stockton woman accused of killing a 3-year-old girl appeared in court Friday for a continued arraignment.

Maria Betancourt did not enter a plea and her arraignment was continued again.

She is charged with child abuse in the death of Guadalupe Correa, who died as a result of trauma

KCRA 3 has learned through Child Protective Service documents that two other instances of alleged child abuse were investigated but caseworkers concluded the child's bruises and injuries were caused by self abuse, and failed to remove the child from the home.
