BURLINGTON, Vt. -- A mother and daughter from Milton face felony charges after allegedly trying to arrange a contract killing of the mother's estranged husband in order to obtain a $1 million life insurance policy the man had, according to court documents.

Jennifer Francis, 20, and her mother, Rebecca Wetter, 42, have both been implicated in the case with Francis pleading guilty to attempting to hire another person to commit a felony, according to court documents. Wetter will face the same charge soon, according to prosecutors.

Essex police were alerted to the two women's plan by an informant in February 2007, according to court documents. The police investigation into the alleged murder plot continued until March 2008, when police filed the charge against Francis.

Court documents outline in-depth interactions between undercover officers, police informants and a police officer who posed as a hit man in the months leading up to charges being filed. The women were apparently willing to pay $10,000 to have Wetter's estranged husband -- Fay Pelletier, 49 -- killed, according to court documents.

The women needed the husband's insurance money to feed their cocaine habits, court documents say. The women were also upset over marital problems the couple was having, as well as tension between Francis and Pelletier, according to court documents.
