City/County:Locust/Stanly CountyStateNC Crime DateDecember 13, 2003 District:Southern Piedmont Description:On Saturday, December 13, 2003, the City of Locust Police Department was called at approximately 3:49 pm and advised that Chance Douglas Smith, age six, was missing from his grandfather's residence located in Locust, NC. Locust Police Department dispatched officers to the scene and a search was conducted by Law Enforcement Officials from various agencies as well as fire and civilian.
At approximately 11:30 pm Smith was located in a pasture near the residence where he had last been scene. Smith was transported to Stanly Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead in the early morning hours of December 14, 2003. The circumstances surrounding Chance's death suggested a homicide. SBI assistance was requested in this matter. Several SBI agents conducted numerous interviews in an attempt to solve this incident. Agents are still pursuing leads as they arise.
