MELBOURNE, Fla. -- A 27-year-old man remains under observation in a special cell today after being charged in the death of his ex-girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter last week.

Joseph C. Wente of Melbourne was charged with first-degree premeditated murder of Kataryn Johnson on Friday and was ordered held without bail during a Saturday court appearance at the Brevard County Detention Center, Local 6 news partner Florida Today reported.

Kataryn, who investigators said suffered traumatic head injuries, died Friday at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women in Orlando, hours after her mother returned home from work about 3 a.m. Friday to find the unconscious child lying on a couch, officials said.

“We found out about what happened during a traffic stop,” said Tod Goodyear of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

“The mother had swooped the child up and was speeding through Melbourne to get to the hospital when Melbourne police pulled her over.”

The officers saw the unresponsive child and alerted medical authorities.

Kataryn was then airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital.

Wente was not Kataryn’s father, investigators said. However, sheriff’s investigators said he does have a 1-year-old son with Kataryn’s mother, an exotic dancer at a Cocoa Beach adult club.

Investigators said Kataryn was in Wente’s care at the time.

Wente, an ex-boyfriend of the mother, had recently moved back into her Melbourne home on Rockway Drive.

Sheriff’s investigators said Wente appeared to have been disciplining the 3-year-old when the injuries happened.

“Something happened; the child possibly broke a plate, we don’t know, but something happened and it went way overboard,” Goodyear said. “He never admitted what happened.”

I personally knew john and had any of you known him then you would 100% know that there is no way at all that he would hurt a fly let alone a child. He was the most good natured laid back down to earth man i have ever met! Did you ever question as to why he would be babysitting a friend's child in the first place? It is because he was very trustworthy and wonderful with children! If you bothered to find out the true facts behind what this horrible father did to his own child then maybe you would think twice about condemning someone you don't even know...

The real story will be out shortly. John Maccarelli did not do this heinous act. There are alot of missing pieces to the puzzle here. The father of the baby did not take the baby from Johns house to the hospital directly, he went home, there was a 10 hour window and THEN he took the child to the hospital. I dont know about you people but dont parents look at their babies after picking them up from a babysitter? when putting them in the car? when putting them in the crib?.... yeah there are alot of holes here... Not to mention the father of this baby is now in jail for manslaughter as he beat a child to DEATH in Nov 2009 and has a long history of child abuse!!!. Google Joseph Wente, Orlando. if you would all please read moon units response... i understand whenever people hear about any abuse to a child or animal, that they want intense suffering to be inflicted onto the wrongdoer. i agree with that. however, before incriminating, facts should be gathered and processed, and research should be done to understand if the story is correct or not. if you take that much interest in this story then you need to know the FACTS before passing judgement... John's passing has no link to this horrible act committed by a scumbag who allowed John to take the blame for his own disgusting horrendous deviant acts... John was a man who loved life and everyone in it!!!! those who knew him and knew him well backed him 100% without any question and were right to do so as his innocence was proven in the end! John Maccarelli, shown with his pet beagle, Lola, was arrested in January 2009 on aggravated child abuse charge after a detective said he beat a 3-month-old baby. The charge against Maccarelli was dropped in December.


A man accused of child abuse was now free because of another brutal attack on a child.

Maccarelli, Velloso and Juliette moved back to the Fort Lauderdale area. "He was very relieved when they dropped the case,'' said his sister Colleena, "but still depressed. We thought he was just really mellow, but now we realize it was a very deep depression.''

He did seem to be planning a future. Velloso said he had qualified for the French Foreign Legion, and planned to sell his van and about $1,000 worth of tools to pay for passage. But on Jan. 27, somebody stole the tag off his van and it was towed.

"It was like the last straw,'' Velloso said.

That evening, she and Juliette visited Velloso's grandmother, who was dying at a hospice. When they got home, Velloso opened the front door.

"I could see John right away,'' she said. "Juliette started screaming. I ran to get a knife and cut him down while Juliette called 911. I tried CPR but it was too late.''

John Maccarelli had hanged himself with Lola's leash.

"I try to block it from my mind,'' Velloso said Friday. "It's the only way I can function. I feel like I'm about to have a nervous breakdown.

"John deserved better.''

Have you spoken to your doctor, your minister, or somebody else you trust to recommend a counselor? I have to tell you; I thought as an ex-NCO I could take anything the world threw at me. I found out I was wrong when the problems kept coming and kept coming and kept coming. I finally ran out of coping capacity. The counseling is helping.

I also apologize for anything I wrote in this thread that made you feel that I was denigrating your brother and friend. I have been burned more than once IRL; as a result I am wary. My PTSD doesn't help either. I can also imagine being compared to James Crise is infuriating. It was not my intent to anger you or denigrate Mr. MacCarelli. I sought a link to an objective report on what happened and did so tersely. Now, having read those objective reports -- well, I apologize.

thanks everyone for taking the time to realize how this whole thing really went down... my brother was a great guy... this year has been tough, coming on here and reading horrible disgusting things about what people thought of him when I knew he was innocent. i hadnt posted til now because I didnt have the backup, and you all wouldve plowed me with questions and stuff I know I would want to read.... and if my brother were alive today.. I may still not have the back up. It took me some work to get the real story out there but luckily Bill Stevens at St Petersburg Times understood my need to have my brothers reputation repaired and he helped me do that. Wente let John MacCarelli III (http://www.dreamindemon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12153) take the blame for injuries his son suffered last year. That ended in November 2009, though, when Wente's ex's toddler daughter died of blunt force trauma incurred when Wente was watching her.

I was heart broken to learn that he wasn't able to hang on after his exoneration. I hope that you were able to take care of Lola because I am sure they loved each other and that he would want you two to comfort each other.

I was just wondering. I am so sorry about your heartache and loss. :( Normally I like written communication much more than oral, but in cases where I am so sad, it is too inadequate. I am so sorry that your brother went through what he did, and also glad to be humbled by being incorrect in assumptions that guilt is too sure after arrests have been made.

It's true that if a case progresses to the point of arrest/announcement that guilt is usually sure, but this case has given me a little glimmer of hope in the world just by making me wrong.

Your brother sounds like he was a lovely person and I am glad that you guys are able to represent him so well and with so much love. I am sorry for the anguish he had in life, but I think that he has been resting in peace with your love and devotion.

To be honest, I opened this thread last night as I was buzzing through the forums, and read the story, figured the title meant that he claimed he didn't hurt the child, just like when the titles sarcastically refer to the criminal's excuse, i.e. "Joe-Bob Smith's Mean Sofa Ate the Family Dog." I did not read the rest of the thread until tonight. Therefore, I also think that a small disclaimer at the top of the thread would not be out of place either to specifically say that this man is innocent.

Again, I realize my opinion doesn't mean much, but just giving the impression that I had as a random reader and how confusing it seemed. I think that it IS important to leave the general thread as the reminder of how some people really DO tell the truth and really ARE good people, but I really wish that it was more obvious about John's innocence rather than his original alleged guilt.

This case brings to mind the BTK killer. As my mom was from Wichita and my grandmother lived there until she died, this was a big case in my life. One of his victims was Vicki Wegerle. She lived a couple of blocks from my Grandparent's house. For 19 years, many people and police though Bill Wegerle had done it.
It took fifteen minutes to discover his wife's body (he was taking care of his son) and he failed not one but two lie detector tests. Throw in the fact he asked for a lawyer fairly fast and people pretty much assumed he had gotten away with killing his wife.
Expect he didn't do it. That case and this case sadly show that even though it may not seem like it, some suspects actually are telling the truth. There is no way to undo the damage done. All we can do is say we're sorry. Not much but it's all we can do.
I do think the picture should be taken down but that's my option.
