DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- DeKalb police are appealing for help in tracking down a hit and run driver that injured a 16-year-old Chamblee High School student.
Family members said Kristian Sales was crossing the street to catch a MARTA bus Tuesday morning when a driver struck the student and then kept going.
JOHN BACHMAN: DeKalb Teen Suffers Brain Injury After Hit, Run Incident
The incident happened on River Road in Ellenwood in south DeKalb County.
The victim’s parents witnessed the incident, as they had just dropped their daughter off near the bus stop.
"A car came out and hit her. She went up in the air. I ran out into street to watch her, and the car that hit her stopped... slowed down... and could tell they had hit her and kept going," said the victim’s mother Chanda Shannon.
Doctors said Sales has a bruised brain and several broken bones.
Sales was listed in critical condition at Grady Hospital Tuesday afternoon.
As they watched the incident happen before their eyes, Sales’ parents said they didn’t think about running into traffic to help their daughter.
"She was lying there still and I said to her, your Daddy's here. Kept saying Daddy's right here, and I just seen her fingers moving... few times," said the victim’s father Mario Shannon.
The victim’s parents said it was dark outside and told police the car that hit their daughter was an older model 4-door vehicle.
I hope they find the driver.
