GASTONIA, N.C. -- Steven Wingate, 20, has been arrested in the murder of a single mother of two who was shot to death in her Gastonia home on Wednesday night.
Brenda Costner, 37, and her two children – C.J. and Brittany Withers – were at home when police say Wingate forced his way into their house and demanded money from Costner. As C.J. Withers went to get his mother’s wallet, police say shots were fired and the child called police.
Costner died at Gaston Memorial Hospital later that evening.
Wingate is charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond.
