KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City police said Monday they suspect foul play in the disappearance of a woman missing since Saturday.
Renee M. Pernice, 35, is married with three young children and lives in the 1100 block of Northwest 66th Terrace.
She's a nurse at St. Luke's Hospital and teaches nursing students. Her husband, relatives said, is a member of the National Guard.
Pernice's father, Rick Pretz, said he is growing increasingly concerned as each hour passes. He said it's not like Pernice to just take off. He last spoke with her on New Year's Day and reported her missing on Saturday.
"No one can account for her presence after 8 a.m. Friday morning," Pretz said.
Police investigating her disappearance said they found her cell phone on Saturday near East Sixth Street and Gladstone Avenue and searched the area.

The husband of a Missouri mother of three who has been missing for nearly a week is being uncooperative with police about his wife's disappearance, Kansas City authorities told ABCNews.com.
Renee Pernice, 35, was last seen by her husband, Shon Pernice, 37, on the morning of Jan. 2, when Pernice said his wife left and never returned.
Pernice has told police that he "doesn't remember" where she said she was going.
"[Pernice] retained an attorney almost immediately and will not talk to us except for through his attorney," said Kansas City Police Capt. Rich Lockhart.
No formal charges have been filed in the case, added Lockhart, and no arrests have been made. Police have been searching for woman using dogs and helicopters and dozens of volunteers are helping.
Messages left for Pernice's lawyer, Kevin Baldwin, were not immediately returned.
But Baldwin told the Kansas City Star newspaper that he has told Pernice not to comment to the media about his wife's disappearance or agree to an interview with police because he believes that his client is "being blamed for her disappearance."
"He misses her; he wants her back even if she chooses not to be with him; she needs to be there for the kids," Baldwin told the paper.
Police said that Pernice has not allowed authorities to speak to any of the three children – ages 11, 8 and 6 – or search the couple's home. "There is obviously concern for [Renee's] well-being," said Lockhart.

A bomb squad was dispatched to the home of a missing Missouri mom during a search after a hand grenade was found.
The hollowed-out grenade was found Friday in a gun safe in the house Renee Pernice shared with her husband, Army Sgt. Shon Pernice, according to MyFOXKC.com. It turned out to be disarmed. The safe belongs to Shon Pernice.
Neighbors were asked to stay inside until the Kansas City Police Bomb Squad was finished investigating, MyFOXKC.com reported.
Investigators planned to continue their search of the home on Saturday, according to the Kansas City Star.

Family and friends of a missing Missouri mother gathered for another search for the teacher but her husband wasn't among them, MyFOXKC.com reported.
Loved ones of Renee Pernice, 35, searched for evidence Monday morning but found no signs of her. A vigil was held in the bitter cold Monday night.
Pernice's husband, Army Sgt. Shon Pernice, and the couple's three children didn't participate in the search, according to MyFOXKC.com. He did attend the vigil, however.
Renee's family said calls to Shon have not been answered and they haven't seen the children since she disappeared Jan. 2, MyFOXKC.com reported.
Shon Pernice has been speaking with police through his attorney, who said he wants his wife to be found.
Monday's search focused on a wooded area near the Pernices' home in Northland, Mo. More than 80 people participated.
Police completed the search of the couple's home on Saturday, after calling in a bomb squad to remove what turned out to be a hollowed-out, inactive hand grenade. Guns and other items were also taken from the house.
Authorities and the missing woman's family say they suspect foul play.
"It's been too long for her to not have contacted any of us, so we feel like something bad has happened," said Renee's mother Linda Lockwood. "She would never, never, never leave her kids and just not say anything to anybody."
Lockwood said she wasn't sure who was taking care of her grandchildren and hasn't been in touch with them since her daughter disappeared.
Renee Pernice's cell phone was found Jan. 3 by a homeless man near Reservoir Park in Kansas City, about 12 to 15 miles from her home, according to MyFOXKC.com.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City police said the husband of a missing woman has given two different accounts of when he last saw her.
According to court documents, Shon Pernice told his in-laws that he last saw 35-year-old Renee Pernice on Jan. 1. But he later told detectives their final encounter was Jan. 2.
Investigators searched the family's northern Kansas City home last week.
ccording to the search warrant, which was made public on Friday, investigators found dark spots in the garage that may be human blood. Further testing will be done on those spot and on dozens of swabs taken inside the home.
The swabs, which were taken in the living room, the bedroom, the vacuum cleaner and the head of an ax, indicate possible traces of blood, court documents show.
In addition to finding several weapons and ammunition in the home, police also found a latex glove inside a coat that had hairs in it, according to court documents.
The affidavit also states that at about 4 a.m. on Jan. 3, Shon Pernice used an electronic keycard to enter a hazmat station where various cleaning supplies are kept. Shon Pernice is an Independence firefighter but is not assigned to that hazmat station. He was in the station several hours before his wife's family reported her missing.

Renee Pernice and family
Detectives also said they saw Shon Pernice release his wife's dog at a city park, indicating he knew she wouldn't be around to take care of the animal, according to court documents.
Relatives said the couple had been having "significant marital problems."
The couple's decade-long marriage seemed to be nearing an end when Renee Pernice filed for divorce in 2005. But the divorce proceedings were dismissed in 2007, according to court records.
More recently though, she had mentioned to family members that she was reconsidering divorce, police said.
According to court records, police found documents from several law firms detailing the anticipated divorce.
Relatives also told police that Renee Pernice had purchased her home before meeting Shon, so it seemed doubtful that she would leave the home to him.
KMBC's Martin Augustine reported that police have taken a swab from Shon's mouth for the purpose of DNA testing.
No one has been arrested in the disappearance. Police have said they suspect foul play.
Through an attorney, Shon Pernice has said he hopes his wife is OK.
In addition to being a firefighter, Shon Pernice is in the National Guard and he served with the Army in Iraq.

The affidavit also said Shon Pernice used an electronic key card to enter a hazardous materials station where various cleaning supplies are kept. Shon Pernice is an Independence, Mo., firefighter but is not assigned to that hazardous materials station.
Police also found divorce documents that indicated that Renee Pernice owned their home and that Shon Pernice was about to leave for military training and wouldn't reside in the home when he returned, according to the affidavit.
Police have said they suspect foul play, but they declined to comment about the content of the court documents.
Renee Pernice's family said they didn't plan to talk about the content of the documents until Saturday.
Through his attorney, Shon Pernice declined to comment Friday night.

Definately the dog is the most important thing in this case. KCPD should assign some detectives to find the dog. Seriously people get a clue. You read this article and your concern is a dog? It is called reading, some of you should try it some time.

Police in Missouri are investigating a flood of tips they've received since they releasing a surveillance video that could be related to the disappearance of a missing woman.
Police on Saturday released photos of a truck and a woman, saying they might be related to Renee Pernice's Jan. 2 disappearance. Police said tips have been pouring in since they released the photos. Now, her family and police hope those leads will bring them closer to ending three weeks of frustration.
"Maybe we're on the verge of cracking open this mystery," Renee’s father, Rick Pretz, told MyFOXKC.com.
The footage showed the truck driving near the area where Pernice, of Northland, was last seen, MyFOXKC.com reported. It was also close to where her cell phone was found shortly after she disappeared, miles away from the woman’s home.
Meanwhile, Renee Pernice's husband Shon Pernice has made inconsistent statements about when he last saw her, according to court documents.

KCTV5 on Monday learned the identity of a woman shown in an image released by police seeking a missing Kansas City woman.
KCTV5 spoke to the mother of Kelli A. Sharp, a 38-year-old teacher at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Kansas City, Kan., and she said her daughter was the woman in the image police released.
Police wouldn't confirm Sharp's identity, saying their investigation was ongoing.
Sharp's attorney, Edward Byrne, issued the following statement:
"Area media have today identified Kelli A. Sharp of Overland Park, Kansas in connection with an ongoing investigation of the disappearance of Renee Pernice on January 2. This office represents Ms. Sharp. We are cooperating fully with local authorities as they continue their search for answers in this case.
Ms. Sharp is NOT a suspect in this investigation. She has no knowledge whatsoever concerning the underlying events, nor does she have any information on the whereabouts of Renee Pernice, or what may have happened to her. Ms. Sharp is merely a responsible citizen who hopes to assist law enforcement officials as they pursue every possible lead. No further inferences should be drawn from todays publication of her name.
Kelli Sharp is a dedicated, professional school teacher in the community, and the mother of two. We ask that you respect her privacy until this investigation is brought to a conclusion by the responsible authorities."http://www.kctv5.com/news/18569681/detail.html#-

OOOH Weird! Husband was "involved" in a case of another missing woman 10 years ago....
Possible Link Between Missing Northland Mom and Decade-Old Mystery
Video report from Fox4 in KC: http://www.fox4kc.com/wdaf-story-pernice-boomer-013009,0,1799219.story
On the evening of February 23, 1999, Ms. Star Boomer was patron of Uncle Mike's Bar in Kansas City, Kansas. Witnesses say she was involved in a violent altercation with a man believed to be lifelong criminal with a history of violent behavior, particularly toward women.
At one point during the evening, Ms. Boomer allegedly was knocked to the ground, causing her to lose consciousness, by 'Gino Spradlin'. She was allegedly given a substance by 'Shon Pernice' while inside the bar, and subsequently carried out by 'Gino Spradlin' and Robert Horn "Butchie".
Ms. Boomer has not been seen or heard from since that date.
The witness accounts that Shon Pernice administered a substance to Star Boomer before her disappearance along with the current developments in the Missing "Renee Pernice" case in Kansas City, Missouri raises many questions. Investigators believe several individuals may have knowledge and information to help solve this crime, but witnesses have not yet come forward with enough evidence to proceed with an arrest or prosecution.http://helpfindthelost.blogspot.com/2009/01/star-boomer.html

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The case of missing mother Renee Pernice is now a death investigation, according to the Clay County prosecutor.
Pernice, 35, was last seen on Jan. 2.
"Based on the weight of existing evidence, the absence of Renee trying to contact family members and the amount of time that has passed since she disappeared, I consider Renee Pernice's case as a death investigation," prosecutor Daniel White said in a news release on Thursday. "We believe foul play is involved."
Pernice's cell phone was found near Sixth Street and Gladstone Avenue. Someone walking down the street spotted the phone, started calling numbers on it and got in touch with Pernice's family.
"She was a devoted family woman, a dedicated career woman, and had numerous family members and friends with whom she was in frequent contact. There has been no contact for over a month. That indicates she cannot make calls or communicate with family and friends," White said.
Pernice's case is being investigated by the Kansas City homicide unit.
Pernice's family will hold a news conference to announce a $25,000 reward at 3:30 p.m.

The search found blood evidence in the garage floor, recycle bin, door mat, under the mat, steps and wall going into the living room, living room walls, living room floor, couch, dining room threshold, dining room, kitchen floor, sinks and floor in the kids' bathroom, floor of the master bedroom, shower in the master bedroom and on an axe head in the garage. There was a refrigerator in the garage and police took the top door of the refrigerator as well as the 23 rifles and pistols from the house.
Today, Kelli A. Sharp who police have said is a person of interest met with investigators accompanied by her attorney. On Saturday, investigators released photos of Sharp and a truck. Surveillance video recorded the truck driving in the area of Gladstone Boulevard from St. John Avenue to Seventh Street or Eighth Street the morning of Jan. 2. Renee cell phone was found near Sixth Street and Gladstone. The truck appears to be white or light-colored, with an extended or quad cab and possibly a rack on top. Two objects in the truck bed appear to be large coolers or storage containers.
I still can't find anything that states whether or not Ms Sharpe is an aquaintance of Mr Pernice or not..but its lookin kinda fishy up in here....

The father of a missing Northland woman says he finds it unsettling that a profile of her husband was posted on a dating Web site.
Rick Pretz said he also was troubled that the profile said Shon Pernice, the husband, was divorced.
“It seems disgusting to me that a person would move forward with another relationship and you have not had closure with your previous relationship,” Pretz said.
Renee Pernice, a 35-year-old mother of two, has not been seen since at least Jan. 2. Clay County Prosecutor Daniel White said this month that there is substantial evidence that she is dead.
White has not provided details on what led to that conclusion. No criminal charges have been filed, and no arrests have been made.
Attorneys for Shon Pernice could not be reached for comment.
Pretz said he had not seen the Web site profile but was upset about the information it contained.
“The very concept that he was posting — that he was divorced and he has two kids — you have to wonder what he is doing,” Pretz said. “He is not divorced, and he has three kids.”
The third child was from a previous relationship.
Police Capt. Rick Lockhart said homicide detectives had viewed the page but were evaluating to see what, if anything, it might have to do with the case.
“It is something that is very unusual, and we want to check into it,” Lockhart said.
Police said they didn’t know when the profile was posted. It is now off the Internet.
Relatives of Renee Pernice recently pooled their money to offer a $25,000 reward for information about her disappearance. Pretz said it was uncharacteristic for his daughter to leave her children and not communicate with family members.
“We are not under any illusion that Renee has gone off to another place. But daily we hope she is found and we can bring her home and have some closure in that sense,” he said.
“We are hoping daily that whoever caused her death is apprehended.”
Renee Pernice had begun divorce proceedings when she vanished. Police obtained a search warrant for her house after her husband refused to let investigators inside.
The affidavit for the search warrant said Shon Pernice had made inconsistent statements about his wife’s disappearance.

Shon Pernice was charged in Clay County Circuit Court with stealing a handgun from a Northland residence that he and his children had visited in late January.
Authorities said that the arrest and criminal charge were not related to the disappearance of Pernice’s wife, Renee Pernice.
Pernice was taken into custody at an Independence fire station, said Capt. Rich Lockhart, and was being held on $25,000 bond.
According to court records, the incident occurred Jan. 31 [wife not seen since Jan 2] when police were summoned to a residence on a reported theft. Police talked to the homeowner, who told them Pernice was at the residence with his children.
At one point, Pernice was alone in the basement for several minutes. Later that evening, Pernice left the home, and the owner tried to set the burglar alarm but discovered that the basement door had been tampered with.
Later that evening, another person who lived at the home arrived after work and went into the basement. He saw the alarm sensor of his door was disabled. He also noticed that a .22-caliber Walther semi-automatic pistol was missing.
On Feb. 1, police said Pernice went back to the home, gave the homeowner the handgun and apologized for taking the weapon, court records stated.
Pernice remains a person of interest in the disappearance of his wife. He has not been arrested or charged in that matter, police have said.http://www.kansascity.com/115/story/1055251.html

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- KMBC's Peggy Breit has an exclusive report on new developments in the case of missing Northland mother Renee Pernice.
Pernice's mother, Linda Lockwood, and her stepfather have filed court documents to get custody of her two sons.
The suit in the application for guardianship refers to Shon Pernice as an unfit father and lists several reasons why the court should take the boys from him.
One reason on that list is Pernice's arrest last month on a charge that he stole a neighbor's gun while picking up his children.
Pernice has never answered questions from KMBC, but he will have to answer the lawsuit, which alleges that he is unable to care for the children and that he has left them alone on at least one occasion. The Pernice boys are now 9 and 6 years old.
That point could be referring to a period a couple of days after Renee Pernice vanished from their home on the first of the year.
Early on the morning of Jan. 3, the Independence Fire Department told police that Pernice used his city entry card to go to the hazardous material fire station, where cleaning materials are stored.
The children were apparently still at the Pernice home, sleeping.
The custody documents also say that Pernice brandished a gun in front of the children, and that he tried to cash accounts in Renee Pernice's name – accounts intended for the children – and that he has a number of outstanding bad checks with the Argosy Casino.
Pernice was served the papers Monday morning. His mother also received paperwork on the suit, since she is another grandparent and helps to watch the children.
Neither Lockwood nor her attorney are ready to talk about the custody filing at this time. They have said that it speaks for itself. The first hearing on the suit is scheduled for next month.

Family members attended a court hearing for Pernice’s husband, Shon Pernice, whom authorities have accused of stealing a neighbor’s handgun. Pernice has pleaded not guilty to the felony charge. The criminal case was continued to June 24.
[...]
Pernice remains a person of interest in his wife’s disappearance. He has not been arrested or charged. Authorities continue to look for a truck that might have been involved in Renee Pernice’s disappearance.
Linda Lockwood, Renee Pernice’s mother, said the grandparents of the Pernices’ children have limited supervised visitation. Lockwood has contended that the children’s father, Shon Pernice, is unfit to be a parent and unable to care for the children.http://www.kansascity.com/115/story/1181037.html

This is additional to the distubing the peace charge that UCat posted above.
Authorities arrested Shon Pernice today after a Clay County grand jury indicted him in connection with a July 4 altercation with a neighbor.
Pernice faces two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child and one count of witness tampering, according to the indictment. His bond was set at $250,000.
[...]
Pernice had been cited for disturbing the peace after he allegedly stood in front of a neighbor’s house and threatened him.
Authorities also said Pernice was intoxicated when he was driving his sons home after leaving a neighborhood park where they were lighting fireworks.http://blogs.kansascity.com/crime_scene/2009/07/shon-pernice-ind (http://blogs.kansascity.com/crime_scene/2009/07/shon-pernice-indicted-in-july-fourth-incident.html)icted-in-july-fourth-incident.html (http://blogs.kansascity.com/crime_scene/2009/07/shon-pernice-indicted-in-july-fourth-incident.html)
The "neighbor" he was disturbing the peace of is also the guy accusing him of stealing the gun earlier this year. That is probably why he's charged with witness tampering.

Shon Pernice Arrested
A Clay County grand jury today indicted Shon Pernice with first-degree murder in the disappearance of his wife, who has been missing since January 2009.
Authorities did not provide details on how they think Renee M. Pernice, a 35-year-old nurse, was killed. Prosecutor Daniel White previously said there was substantial evidence that Renee Pernice is dead, but her body has not been found.
Pernice was arrested without incident Tuesday afternoon at his home in Kansas City, North. Bond has been set at $1 million.

A Clay County judge on Thursday denied Shon Pernice's request to reduce his $1 million bond.
A witness from an electronic monitoring service who testified on behalf of the defense said Pernice had complied with his previous requirements for house arrest. But Clay County prosecutors argued that Pernice is a still a flight risk.

Prosecutors presented arguments on Thursday when the case comes to trial. Prosecutors told the judge that Pernice had told conflicting stories about the day he last saw his wife. They said he asked his new girlfriend to buy him a gun even though he was not allowed by the court to possess one.
Prosecutors also said that while Renee's family was searching for her, Pernice was at a casino with another woman.

Defense attorneys said the evidence was all circumstantial, adding that there is no proof that Renee was even murdered.
The family said there is still a $25,000 reward for anyone who has information about where Renee might be.
