ANFORD, Fla. -- A Seminole County man was arrested for trying to steal a 3-year-old boy right out of his mother's arms and it happened in front of customers at a crowded McDonalds in Sanford.
Investigators said the woman had to play tug-of-war over her own son after the strange man grabbed her child and would not let go. She eventually broke free and ran.
It must've been a terrifying few moments for the young mother, around 9:00pm Thursday, as she and her kids were trying to have some New Year's dinner. She ended up struggling with a man trying to steal her child right from her lap.
Andrew Sheppard, 58, was booked into the Seminole County jail after his arrest. Just hours earlier, he walked into the McDonalds at French Avenue and Second Street (see map), approached the victim and her children and then grabbed the little boy by his left arm as his mother was holding him in her arms.
After a tug-of-war back and forth over the little child, Sheppard then went after the victim's purse, apparently trying to rip it off her shoulder. The whole time, Sheppard was shouting at the family and telling them that he's homeless and that if she were a good person she'd help him and give him money.
After breaking free from Sheppard, the mother ran with her kids out to their car where they locked the door and called police.

Why would he try to take the little boy unless he's a pedophile? That doesn't even make sense.
Did anyone at the Mcdonalds try to help her? Tackle him or anything?

He wasnt on any Pedo lists, I checked, He was just a crazy homless guy that hung out there, As far as what I read no one including the employees tried to help the woman. I believe what happened was he tried to hit mommy up for some cash, she said no and got scared of him and held her child, he tried to grab the kid for hostage money. What he really wanted was cash for booze, drugs, what ever.

Mommy got interviewed by the local news channel, She said she was in line at the counter, when the drunk AssHat walked in, trying to panhandle money from everyone, he got pissed when everyone got scared of him and gave him no money, He started yelling drunk shit at people in the drive through, her 3 year old boy got scared and told his mom he was a scary guy and he was affraid of him. Andrew tried to hit her up for some cash, but the little boy was killing his sales pitch. It kind of went all downhill after that. Fucking drunk Tards.

How crazy is that! Reading this made me really uncomfortable....I can't imagine how scary it was for the mother. Poor child must have been beside himself in fear.
I'm all for helping the homeless but I do it by donations and such to keep it safe...you never know, as you can see...crazy shit happens....whew, glad everyone is O.K.

Why would he try to take the little boy unless he's a pedophile? That doesn't even make sense. My guess is that this guy has dementia and was at the time, thinking that this kid was his from an earlier time in his life. Dementia patients do go back through their lives.
One Dementia patient, was from another country and spoke her native language then came to the US and learned English, she got up one morning and could only speak her native language and could not understand what the nurses were saying to her in English.

Ohh ohh, The cops are calling foul ball to Jennifer Parris, 22. mother of the small boy. They pulled the video tapes and her story didnt match up with what was on them. Well some of it did but, Andrew Sheppard never grabed the kid or her purse. He was annoying as hell but he never touched the kid or the mom, infact the little boy reached out his arms to Andrew, not the other way around. I guess Mommy just overreacted about the whole thing.
Surveillance video doesn't support kidnapping, robbery charges against homeless Sanford man
SANFORD - A homeless man was arrested Thursday night following an incident at a downtown Sanford McDonald's, but police said tonight that the most serious charges he faces -- kidnapping and robbery -- will likely be dropped as early as Monday.
Andrew Sheppard Jr. is being held without bail in the Seminole County Jail in Sanford. In addition to the robbery and kidnap charges, he also is accused of two counts of battery. He might still face a simple battery charge, but a surveillance video of the incident does not support the more serious charges, Sanford police Lt. Mike Horan said.
Police accused Sheppard, 58, of trying to grab a 3-year-old from his mother shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday inside the McDonald's at French Avenue and Second Street, as well as grabbing at her purse.
But the video shows Sheppard was inside the restaurant and the boy was running around, Horan said. Jennifer Parris, 22, picked up her son and placed him on the counter and Sheppard then walked up close to them, Horan said. But instead of the man grabbing the boy, the video shows the boy reaching out to the man, which appears to be the extent of the touching, he said.
Horan said he watched the video at the restaurant and that it has not yet been released to the police department. Once it is, investigators will study it closely before making a final determination.
