Cops: Woman Dressed As Nurse Tried Stealing Kid

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee police said they arrested a woman who dressed like a nurse, entered a hospital maternity room and tried to leave with someone else's baby.

Nashville police said charges were pending against Adriene Johnson, who was in custody.

According to a police report, the 24-year-old entered the maternity room Wednesday wearing medical scrubs and said she needed to check the baby's temperature.

Police said Johnson triggered security measures when she tried to leave with the baby. The room was locked down, and the newborn was handed over to a doctor.

Police said Johnson had been on bond after being arrested Monday and charged with stealing a baby rocker from a Wal-Mart and trying to return it for money.

A message was left with police inquiring whether Johnson had an attorney.

I am kind of wondering, if she specifically targeted this one particular woman, like she had seen her, lived by her or if it was just random???

Police said Johnson tried to leave the hospital, but triggered hospital security, causing the maternity area to be put on lockdown.

Johnson then tried to hand the newborn to doctor and leave the hospital but was detained by hospital staff until police arrived.

"Security at the hospital apparently stopped the woman, so it's not believed she was an employee," said Metro police spokeswoman Kristen Helm. "The relationship between this woman and the mother is unknown. Again, it's very early. We're still talking to the woman."

Police said they are looking for a red Chevrolet Impala because the woman may have had an accomplice who was going to help them escape.

Adriene Johnson, 24, of Nashville, was arrested at Nashville General Hospital at Meharry after posing as a nurse in scrubs and attempting to walk away with a newborn baby, according to Metro police.

Johnson told nurses that she was a visiting friend and then entered the 23-year-old mother's room. She then told the young mother that she needed to take the baby's temperature and took the newborn from the room, police say.

When Johnson tried to leave the maternity floor an automatic electronic security system was triggered. Floor was locked down

The system is automatic and immediately locks down the women's services area, hospital spokeswoman Cathy Everett said. Elevators are shut down and staff go to alert stations, Everett said. "The floor shuts down," Everett said. "But it's not just an electronic security system. The people know exactly what to do. We have mock drills."

Within minutes, Johnson handed the newborn to a doctor and tried to leave the building, police said. Hospital staff detained her until police arrived. The security system has been in place for four years. Everett said the hospital has had no other kidnapping attempts.

When my SIL had my niece, the hospital that Resse was born in had just implemented all these new computerized procedures in the paternity ward.

Everyone entering and leaving had to have a fingerprint "read" by the computer going in and coming out, as well as a Barcoded ID card, that was scanned when you entered of left the ward. (Kind of a UPC code for humans)

It was kind of an eerie feeling knowing that you were being tracked like that, but on the other hand when you hear stories like this, it makes you glad that the Hospitals have a system in place to prevent incidents like this from happening.

I think this stupid bitch watches to many Soap opera's. The name of this hospital is called " General Hospital ". Another soap opera called "One Life to Live," has a baby kidnapping story were the baby's are sold on the black market. Coincidence ?? I don't think so.

This twatwaffle has a pretty big criminal history besides the Wal-Mart baby rocker theft charge, Its probly not going to be to hard to figure out what friend of hers was driving the getaway car. Looks like they hatched some "sell a baby" scheme.

I responded to 1818 Albion St. at Meharry Hospital on a possible kidnapping. After arriving I spoke with Ms. Jean Petty who stated while working she heard the Infant Security alarm sound. At that time she proceeded to the nurses station to identify which infant alarm was sounding. Through a computer check they were able to identify who the alarm belonged to. Ms. Petty states she then observed a female black wearing a flower print top walking toward the elevators. She stopped the female and tried to identify her. The women stated that she was there visiting a friend. At that time she started back towards the patients room. The same female was identified from another witness carrying an infant and handing the infant off to that witness. The female was observed running off from that witness and later found in the Labor and Recovery section. At that point she was detained by Hospital staff until Police arrived. The victim's mother identified the suspect as the one who came into her room and took the child telling her that she was going to take the child to take her temp.

Sgt. Vincion stopped the defendant because the license plate that was on the vehicle that she was driving is stolen. After further investigation, it was found out that the defendant's drivers license is suspended. Defendant told Officer Benz that her name is Tonya Howse, which turned out to be false.

Officers arrived at 756 apt.B Lynwood ave due to a crime stoppers tip that a Tanya Howse was there and that she has a warrant for her arrest for attempted criminal homicide. When officers knocked on the door, the owner of the apartment (Adriene M Johnson) and Voorhies both came to the door. Officers explained to the defendant who they were looking for, and that she had a warrant on file for a felony. The defendant told officers that she knew of Tanya Howse, but that she hasn't seen her today. After officers located Howse hidding in a closet inside the apartment, Howse told officers that all three of the subjects inside the apartment and just arrived in the Candi Voorhies's car.

The defendant was the driver and only occupant of a white ford mustang with an expired temp tag (04/28/08). She was stopped at Nolensville Rd and Tanksley Ave. by the affiant, a Metro Nashville Police Officer, for the violation. She stated her driver's license was suspended and she handed affiant a state ID # 089135923 of a Cecret Williams, f/b, dob:08/16/78. She also handed officer some sale paperwork for the vehicle that had the name
of Adrien Johnson. ......the paperwork she handed me she said the vehicle was in a family member's name, but that it was her vehicle. I also asked her if she had ever received any state citations before for driving on suspended
and she stated that she wasn't "trying to be smart" but that I would need to look it up on the computer because she couldn't remember. I ran the number on the ID she gave me and it came back as suspended. I ran the criminal history for the person on the ID through dispatch and that person had about 5 capiases and FTB's .... I asked her to recite her social security number for me as I was becoming suspicious that she was not the person on the ID as the picture on the ID looked much thinner and the face did not appear to be the same. She then stated, "I'm not going to lie, that's not me." She then advised that it was her best friend's ID. She further stated that her father had told her that officers had been by the house recently so she was afraid she might have a warrant. She stated then that the person on the vehicle paperwork, Adrien Johnson, was her. A check through warrants on her real name revealed she had an outstanding capias for a previous driving on suspended license charge.

On 04/27/06 at approximately 1650 hours I was dispatched to a person with a weapon call at 1113 N. 6th St., Nashville,TN 37207. I made contact with suspect(Candi D. Voorhies) who was standing next to her vehicle in front of residence. Suspect and vehicle matched the descripton of those given by the dispatcher. Suspect immediately told me that she had "been disrespected" by the victim(Porschesann Jenkins) and that she had threatened her
with a pipe. I informed the suspect that I was looking for a person with a weapon and she repeatedly stated that she was using a pipe to threaten the victim and not a gun. I asked suspect for consent to search the vehicle and it was granted. My backup officer located a weapon underneath the drivers seat of the suspects vehicle. Victim stated that suspect and herself had gotten into an argument on the phone. Suspect became angry and came to the victim's residence where she threatened to shoot the victim and her boyfriend while brandishing a gun. Victim stated that suspect told the victims repeatedly, "I got you".

I ran TN tag 295JBZ, as it pulled into the parking lot at Gallatin and Seymour. The tag came back stolen. I observed the suspect exit the vehicle and approached her about it. She stated a friend was letting her borrow the vehicle. A records check of the VIN revealed that the vehicle was also reported stolen. The susepct was placed under arrest and put in the back of Officer Reed's patrol car. A search of the vehicle located a Lortab pill wrapped in a paper sack in the console. Under miranda
the suspect stated the pill was hers and she was taking it for a tooth ache. She also stated a friend gave it to her.

The susepct was placed under arrest and put in the back of Officer Reed's patrol car. The suspect became very disorderly and began screaming and kicking the window and door. Officers then had to restrain the suspect in order to prevent further damage to the patrol car. The suspect had high heels on and her heels punctured three holes in the rear door panel.

When I had my first the maternity ward did not have locks on the doors. You could just walk in. And guess what they had right next to the maternity ward? The nut ward, I shit you not. I saw 2 obviously medicated men wandering the halls! I left after one day and went home.

I'm not sure exactly how it was set up, but I think when I had my daughter one of her bracelets had to be cut off because it would set off the alarm at the door. Also my visitors could not get in or out without a particular person (not just any nurse on the floor) opening the door for them.

With my first born, the hospital I was at had these leg wrap security devices that looked really uncomfortable on my baby. He didn't seem to mind it and it sure as heck gave me some peace of mind. Those security devices automatically go off and alarms blare if a baby is taken out of the maternity ward with out first being deactivated by personnel....pic below.
