A Jacksonville man has been charged in the Dec. 20 beating death of the 5-week-old baby of his girlfriend, the Sheriff's Office released today.

Jonpaul Anthony Harms, 20, was arrested a day later after an autopsy indicated the boy's death was a homicide. He is accused of striking his live-in girlfriend's child in the back of the head twice because the infant wouldn't stop crying, according to the arrest report.

The report said Harms was babysitting the child at the Jack Horner Lane home when it happened. The baby, Amari Copeland, was taken to Baptist Medical Center in cardiac arrest. Resuscitation efforts by hospital staff didn't take, and the child was pronounced dead minutes after arrival.

An emergency doctor noted swelling on the infant's head, and an X-ray revealed a skull fracture, police said. The autopsy concluded the child was killed due to blunt-force trauma.

Harms pleaded no contest to domestic battery in 2007 and was ordered to an abuse program for two weeks, court records show. He is being held in lieu of bail.

According to JonPaul Harms' arrest report, he admitted during questioning that he hit the baby five times with his closed fist. Investigators say Harms told them, "The infant would not stop crying."

In addition to murder, Harms was also charged with violation of community control and driving without a license. He was being held without bond in the Duval County jail.

This is not the first time Harms has been charged with domestic violence. Channel 4 learned that he was arrested in 2007 for beating the baby's mother, Phoebe Copeland.

After the baby's death, Copeland, 39, was also arrested and charged with child neglect. Investigators said her four children were living in a car, not fed or bathed, and were described as "frightened."

Fucking dirtbag mother fucker, and the state as well, 3/25/2007 he is arested for domestic violence, he finally pleads the AssHat "No Contest.", He is ordered to have no contact with the victum.

The freakin Salvation Army says we will be his keeper, and 4 months later he is back for breaking probation, he gets a whoppin 8 days and gets court ordered abuse program, 3 month later 11/7/2007 another parole violation and a warrant for his arrest. Looks like he didn't do shit he was supposed to do, including contact with the victims. I wouldnt dought a bit the original victim was the mother of the child.

A sure way to make an infant stop crying FOREVER...pieceofshit bastard. I hope he gets the same treatment in prison and then some. I would love to read about this baby killer being viciously killed in prison as someone finds out he beat a helpless baby.
