A Sheboygan therapist is accused of victimizing people who had been sexually abused and were seeking his help.
State investigators said the abuse happened at an in-patient Sheboygan rehabilitation center.
Coworkers at Genesis Behavioral Services told investigators they got suspicious when 45-year-old John Monacelli started spending an “unusual” amount of one-on-one time with one of his female patients.
Monacelli worked as a therapist at the drug rehab center.
Investigators said Monacelli sexually assaulted two of his patients -- a man and a woman -- on several different occasions in October of 2007.
The male patient said Monacelli counseled him about sexual abuse he suffered as a child.
He said Monacelli told him the only way to forget the abuse was to “relive it and realize that it was not that bad."
On at least three different occasions the patient said the therapist exposed himself and made him perform sex acts on him.
Investigators said Monacelli threatened his patient and told him not to tell anyone.
During the same time period, the female patient told investigators Monacelli encouraged her to talk about her past sexual encounters.
Investigators said the man fondled the patient, exposed himself and had sexual intercourse with her over several weeks time.
Monacelli is out of custody, but didn't answer the door at his Menomonee Falls, Wis., home.
He faces eight counts of sexual exploitation by a therapist that could result in a sentence of up to 100 years in prison and a $200,000 fine if convicted.
Monacelli is due in Sheboygan County Court on Monday.
