Detroit, Michigan - Two severely cognitively impaired teenage girls have been missing from the residential facility where they live since Sunday night, a social worker there said Tuesday night.

Precious Lance and Emma Martin were last seen at approximately 11:30 p.m. at New Directions on East Grand Boulevard, a home run by Lutheran Child and Family Services of Michigan, according to residential counselor Dolores Burch. They have IQs of 50 and 60, similar to those of small children.

Precious, who’s originally from Pontiac, is 5-foot-3 and 130 pounds with medium-length hair. Emma, a Detroiter, is 5 feet 2 inches tall, weighs 125 pounds and has short black hair. Both are African American and have brown eyes.

How the girls managed to leave is unclear, according to Burch.

“Even though they’re 14 years old. they’re closer to a six- to eight-year-old in their ability to function, reason, etc., not to mention they’re both emotionally impaired and mentally impaired,” Burch explained. “One of them is being treated by her psychiatrist for depression. They may as well be an Amber Alert child. However, they don’t meet their criteria because of their age.”

Anyone with information is asked to call New Directions at 313-921-3740.

so does this story poke a hole in the amber alert system bc it should be based on mental age rather than chronological age? or is the amber alert fine the way it is? i cant decide.

I think it should be according to mental age, absolutely. I've personally known in my lifetime people who were in there late teens/20's who had the mental capability of 9-10 year olds. But then you have to think that people (parents) will do absolutely anything to get their missing kids back by maybe diluting the truth a bit at first just to get the Amber Alert out. Saying you have a slightly retarded, "of age" child who wondered off and telling LE that yeah..they're like a little kid.
