Long blonde hair
Carla was last seen wearing a light blue dress which was found at the scene when her remains were discovered.Carla and her boyfriend, Rodney, went to a Valentine's Day dance at the high school on Feb. 17, 1974, a Saturday night. Afterwards the couple met friends at a popular drive-through restaurant not far from Carla's South Fort Worth home. At approximately midnight, Carla needed to use the restroom, and Rodney drove her to a nearby bowling alley. Rodney walked her into the building and waited for her.
They were getting into the car when someone jerked open the passenger door and grabbed Carla. Rodney said he struggled with the attacker but was hit over the head and knocked unconscious. He does remember the man saying, "I'm going to kill you." Police later found a clip for a .22-caliber Ruger semi-automatic pistol lying in the parking lot and speculated that it had fallen from the kidnapper's pistol. When he awoke Carla was gone. Bleeding from his head, he drove to Carla's parents house to report her missing.
On February 20, 1974 Carla's body was found under a culvert near Benbrook Lane in Tarrant County. The medical examiner said Carla had apparently been drugged with morphine, raped, and kept alive for about two days before being strangled.
Carla Walker was an outgoing, athletic, and popular student at Western Hills High School.

Why do I not believe the boyfriend's story?
CelticMyth

But if the boyfriend drove immediately to the parent's house and the girl was found to be kept alive and drugged for two days then I don't see how he could have pulled it off. It would be hard to drug her, stash her somewhere, contact the parents who contact the police and then repeatedly keep going back to where she was to rape and drug her more with the police watching for two days. Possible I guess but not very likely.

Why do you not believe the boyfriend's story?
Read the stories on this site. Very often the perpetrator IS the boyfriend, the husband, the ex, etc. However, I'm with Celtic on this one. If she was drugged and kept alive for 2 days, I don't see how the boyfriend could've pulled it off.

She was such a lovely young girl...more of a young lady just starting her life.
I don't get the feeling the boyfriend did it...not if he reported it immediately and wasn't suspiciously gone for days after. But as we know, it could turn out different.
I hope the bastard is found, although he may be did...if he's dead I hope it was a brutal ending.

CARLA WALKER
THE CASE: They were getting into the car when someone
jerked open the passenger door and grabbed Walker. McCoy
said he struggled with the attacker but was hit over the
head and knocked unconscious, although he remembered the
man saying, "I'm going to kill you." Police later found
a clip for a .22-caliber Ruger semi-automatic pistol
lying in the parking lot and speculated that it had
fallen from the kidnapper's pistol.
McCoy awoke with blood streaming down his face and drove
to his girlfriend's house, where Doris Walker had been
watching the clock. It was after midnight, time for
Carla to be getting home. "That's when Rodney came and
started banging on the door," she said. "He had been hit
on the head." Her husband went looking for Carla, while
Doris Walker called an ambulance for McCoy and rode with
him to the hospital.
1:Where was Rodney when he was hit over the head and
where did he wake up?
2:Did anybody from the establishment (bowling alley) see
where he had fallen and helped him?
3:Where exactly was the clip to the gun found?
4:how much time had passed between stopping at the
bowling alley and when Rodney woke up and then headed to
the Walker's home?
5:At what time did they actually stop at the bowling
alley?
6:How fast did Rodney McCoy get from one side of the car
to the other in order to struggle with the attacker?
7:How did Rodney grab Carla before she was taken out of
the car?
8:Which begs the question of how Rodney got hit over the
head and knocked unconscious?
9:How did he end up struggling with the attacker?
These are very interesting questions aren't they!

So..... where is Wilhoit now? That article was 2002... has Wilhoit turned up again?
About Wilhoit - article in May 2003:
William Ted Wilhoit, a habitual burglar and convicted rapist, was paroled from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in January (2003) after serving more than 22 years in prison. He is currently living in Corpus Christi.
Years ago, Wilhoit hinted to Terrell that he had been responsible for Walker’s abduction and murder.
[...]
Last week, Thornton said the testing had been completed to no avail. “We did some more DNA testing that came up negative on some of the existing names we had as possible suspects,” he said. “We received the results of those, and they said they were negative as far as any matches.”
Thornton declined to say what kind of bodily evidence was tested or which suspects it came from.
[...]
Terrell is in contact with Corpus Christi police and probation officers again, warning them that he believes Wilhoit will be unable to resist the demons that drive him. “He’ll strike again,” Terrell said.http://www.fwweekly.com/content.asp?article=2229
The side story of retired detective John Terrell is pretty interesting in itself.

Wikipedia showed me some 1107 pages exist that reference "John" and "Terrell" and another 292 that reference "Carla" and "Walker". I assumed he would have been buried in Texas if he had died so I checked there at findagrave.com, but the only two people there that matched names and who died in the allowable range of dates didn't match the other particulars. It is possible that Det. Terrell is still alive, but the web site that he started -- http://www.justiceforcarla.com -- tells a different story. The Ft. Worth Weekly printed a followup in March 2004 here (http://www.fwweekly.com/content.asp?article=1396) that indicated he was still alive then and coming up fast on 74 years old, which is what I used to inform my search at findagrave.com.
If I wanted to know when Det. Terrell died I think I would contact the Ft Worth Weekly and ask them if they knew.

I found out from my brother that terrell is actually giving up on this case for several reasons including the fact that he is around 80 years old and the fact that not too many women like to talk about their experiences about having been raped or the fact that they aren't alive to even tell!
This is still being investigated by other investigators and I hope they are able to resolve this case.I am sadden by those who wish not to get involved in such matters are selfish!
"Turning the other cheek" would not exactly be a good idea in cases like this! People need to come forward and do everything and anything in order to help and not to hinder in the pursuit of justice!
After 35 years of dogged pursuit John Terrell is letting it go and putting it behind him and let others take over! I have to hand it to him that he was so dedicated to this case that he needs a rest!

I did a search on the Ft. Worth Weekly's home page and discovered their archives are being reindexed -- but they offered a Google search instead and that paid off. Det. Terrell last appeared in the paper on January 9, 2008 (http://www.fwweekly.com/content.asp?article=6614) saying he had boxed up his files on the Carla Walker murder and was giving up. If he has died in the intervening 15 months, his estate would have had to go through probate and that box of files would have been part of the estate.
Can you get to the county courthouse in Tarrant Co., Texas, to see who his executor was? If not, can you E-mail them?

He has, in a manner of speaking. He was released from prison on intensive probation -- restricted travel area, GPS ankle bracelet, and Standard Conditions, one of which was no alcohol -- in January 2003. He was arrested in March 2007 outside his approved travel area having bought beer but wasn't violated for that.

Knocked unconscious by the blow to his head, Rodney awoke to find Carla gone. With blood streaming down his face,
he drove the few short blocks to the home of Carla's parents to report the crime.
This is from the Justice For Carla sight.......I'm wondering if it was just "a few short blocks" to Carla's home.....why would they stop somewhere to use the restroom......why not wait til she got home?
That makes me question BF's story right there. Just sayin'.

Synopsis:
On February 17, 1974, Carla Walker was kidnapped while she sat in a car with her boyfriend at the Ridglea Bowl parking lot.
And that is all the police have to say and gives no other details!
http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3149847
This is located just under another cold case when two girls went missing from a mall #149
In 1975, there was no curfew in Ft. Worth and many kids and high school kids would stay out or sneak out their bedroom windows and stay out to all hours.
Carla Walker - the rumor around the high schools was that she and her boyfriend were actually making out in the car at the time they were attacked. The parking lot they were in was for a bowling alley located on the south side of the Benbrook Traffic Circle. According to the story I hear, they had left the car doors unlocked. The killer merely opened the door and wailed away at the boyfriend with a baseball bat. The boyfriend was badly injured and obviously attacked from behind, so, there is no way he could be considered a suspect. As to why he moved from the area, frankly, Ft. Worth doesn't have that many job opportunities compared to other cities. I'm sure he moved for the same reason I and most of my friends moved - to live in a place with job opportunities.

Carla Walker was an outgoing, athletic, and popular student at Western Hills High School. She and her boyfriend, Rodney McCoy, went to a Valentines Day dance at the high school on Feb. 17, 1974 a Saturday night and, afterward, met friends at a popular drive-through restaurant not far from her parents South Fort Worth home. At about midnight, Walker said she needed to use the restroom, and McCoy drove her to a nearby bowling alley. McCoy walked her into the building and waited for her. They were getting into the car when someone jerked open the passenger door and grabbed Walker. McCoy said he struggled with the attacker but was hit over the head and knocked unconscious, although he remembered the man saying, Im going to kill you. Police later found a clip for a .22-caliber Ruger semi-automatic pistol lying in the parking lot and speculated that it had fallen from the kidnappers pistol.

How awful. How absolutely awful.
The quotes about the boyfriend seem to indicate that he was under suspicion at some point? Poor sod. I guess at least the information about her being kept alive for two days removes the spotlight from him rather; but it makes it so much more terrifying to know that they might have had a chance of saving her.......

The Ruger Standard model is a firearm introduced in 1949 as the first product manufactured by Sturm, Ruger and Company, and was the founding member of a product line of .22 Long Rifle rimfire cartridge pistols. It was marketed as an inexpensive .22 caliber rimfire intended for casual sport and target shooting, and plinking. Created by firearms expert and Renaissance man William B. Ruger, the Standard model and its offspring went on to become the most accepted and successful .22 semi-automatic pistol ever produced.

That is a stretch, mickie. The police and military may use it for training, but the 22 -- while an effective killer of people -- does not have the punch to be a stopper. For that matter when I trained with a handgun it was with my duty weapon, not a subcaliber variant or some workalike.

So what if someone has information would anybody actually listen? NO!
And if JESUS returned would anyone notice? probably not!

I don't think that you're going to find Carla's murderer among the ranks of either the police department or the military simply because the maker of the pistol used in her kidnapping made a model they called a Government Target Model 12 years after she died. The conventional wisdom seems to be that Wilhoit was the perpetrator. If you can show that he dropped out of sight for two or three days after Carla was kidnapped and that he possessed a Ruger Standard Model then that would add to the evidence that the conventional wisdom is correct.

Lots of television shows and movies make a habit of piss-poor (pardon my bluntness) gun handling practices -- like pointing a gun at somebody as a threat then using it as a bludgeon. The result is either a broken gun or one that is missing the magazine. Anybody that has handled real firearms in real-world situations understands that, and those that know that their weapon can be used to save their life or that of somebody else not only understand that, they live it.
Is Wilhoit a big action-picture fan?

This is from the story that is posted on t JUSTICE JUNCTION site about this case and of the weapon that was probably used was what I had posted earlier:
"There would be a total of six disappearances both before and a year or so after Carla's murder. One woman was shot five times in the face (but survived)".
The question is how she had survived from the "five" bullets that hit her?
The fact that the bullets that were used were probably flat nosed target bullets!
And the fact that a gun shot at close range ( two to five feet away) would have killed her instantly!

While I'm not saying that this is the case here, I would point out that people have survived more traumatic injury than this one. When I was studying language and cognition in college we discussed a case where a man had attempted suicide with a shotgun under his chin. It shot out half his brain, but he did survive.
It's extremely unlikely, but possible, that her brain worked around the damage and she survived.

I believe she may have been Wilhoit's friend and that Rodney was
possessive and overly protective of her ,and that he was not allowing her to see anyone else but
RODNEY!
She could not have any friends but only he could!
CARLA was very popular at school and This probably made RODNEY jealous! They might have gotten into a verbal argument over it and then Rodney had taken it out on CARLA for being with WIHOIT!
After the argument it was then RODNEY decided to end the relationship!
Carla got along with everyone and that she tried to help out whenever she could! She made a lot of friends, especially at school.
She made friends with WIHOIT but didn't know anything about him but that she probably didn't let bother her.
And just why did WIHOIT cry in the interrogation room when he was just
about to spill his guts about the case, and he just stopped when there
was knock on the door!?
Because he had just lost his friend!
Rodney left town soon after,And after Rodney had left town the killings just stopped!
am probably wrong about this too!
I don't know for sure.
If RODNEY really loved her he would have stuck around in order to find the real killer.I myself can't see why he wouldn't do just that and not just move away like some kind of cop-out.
A way of avoiding the situation!
Why would RODNEY feel guilty if he didn't do it?I like to ask as to why would RODNEY would go anywhere near to where
WILHOIT lived if not to prove a point!
Shift the blame to someone else that's what for!
If RODNEY had any idea or knowledge of what WILHOIT was like he would never have put CARLA in harms way.
On that particular day and that particular time!
It would be easy to pin the crime on WILHOIT!
How convenient!:

They wanted me off the web site also for being disrespectful to them and going against the terms of service.
I can't see why or how? What exactly did I do?

Sure I am probably just guessing at the stuff I said, but what if I am partially right!

If Rodney McCoy was hit over the head with a gun
(Supposedly) why didn't any come to his aid?
Lets speculate that it never happened the way that he
said!
Maybe he hit his head on the trunk lid hatch!
Then drove to the lake to dump the body and then headed
for CARLA"S parents house to report the crime!
Lets say that she was left for dead trying to stay alive
for two days but couldn't and finally died as a result
of her injuries and from the drug that was given to her!
If Rodney McCoy had done the crime he would have gotten
off Scot-free,and that Ted hilhoit was somehow involved
in this plot as well!
I myself feel that there is more to this then meets the
eye!
I'll get over this once somebody realizes that the
things I said are merely suggestions and possibilities
of what could have happened.(after thoughts)
(justicejunction.com)Annarocket is skeptical and she needs to have an open
mind!
I'm not saying that the things I said are true in any
way but that they are things to put into consideration!
Justice Junction slogan is: the pursuit of justice!
I like for them to live up to it!

WHY I DON't BELIEVE THE STORY
The story at the beginning is the story RODNEY MCOY gave to the police at the time.
Carla Walker was an outgoing, athletic, and popular student at Western Hills High School.
.22-caliber Ruger semi-automatic pistol has a safety lock (catch) to prevent the magazine (clip) from falling out of (dislodging) from the gun accidentally.
The problem is that the police believed his story, and was released as he was not considered a suspect.
The only person who was around to tell of what happened and was able to convince the police.

It was not wWILHOIT's 'mo'(modus operandi) to go after someone that was with
anyone else.He would stalk women when they were left alone at their home!
If you go to:panther's rest a cry for justice:
The bowling alley in question is the one located at the corner of Marquita DR
and Ruby PL one the west side of the Weatherford traffic circle. The bowling
alley was called at the time the 'BRUNSWICK' bowling alley.the other bowling
alley was called THE RIDGLEA BOWL which was a skating rink and then a theater. It
is located on CAMP BOWIE BLVD and Bryant Irvin RD.
Wilhoit lived in that area not in BENBROOK.
After reading all the info of the crime I noticed a oddities:Carla and her
boyfriend drove to the bowling alley to use the washroom, then Rodney walked her
to the main door and then waited for her outside.Just when they got back in the
car the door on the passenger side was yanked open. The man struggling with Carla
told Rodney 'I going to kill you'.
Why didn't he?
The man had all the opportunity to do so!
Taking in to consideration of where the street light was to the front of where
the main door was to the bowling alley, and to the place where their car was
parked, and the fact that the lights were turned off at 12:30 am when the place
closed for the night:
I am amazed that anyone could or would be able to see anything exempt for a
silhouette or even what color of hair the man had!
One important note is:3400 Ramona is where she lived before the other lane of
traffic was installed on CAMP BOWIE BLVD in the year 2000.
(a few blocks from her home is where the bowling was located. The restaurant at
the time was A&W that had just opened in BENBROOK TEXAS.
I got most if the info from a person who used to live in the area and the
research I did on the internet!
The police only got one side of the story of the crime only because Rodney McCoy was the only one there to tell of what happened!
But what if there is more then he is letting on!
why didn't the police do a thorough investigation on him?
Why didn't anyone, even the police stop to see if he was OK if he was slumped over in the passenger side of the car with the door to the car open?
Or was he there at all?
Why didn't Rodney McCoy (if he loved CARLA WALKER) stay in Benbrook to help find the killer?
Anybody with sense in their head would have tried to pursue his girlfriends abduction and murder like John F. Terrell?
Why did Rodney McCoy leave BENBROOK area and move to Austin Texas?
Was it because of a reminder of the crime or something else!
I think I know the real reason why WILLIAM TED WILHOIT cried in the interrogation room!
One question that should have been asked is to how William Ted Wilhoit knew the name of victim (CARLA WALKER) unless he was told who she was days before the time of the crime unless it was a planned attack?
William Ted Wilhoit was a thief and maybe he stole the morphine, but who is the one who used it?
It takes approximately 20 minutes to wake up from a concussion to the head. and thus being dazed and confused and then realizing as to what happened it would take quite a while to get his senses together in order to drive to her parents house to report the crime.
It takes approximately 15 – 20 minutes to drive to the lake and then the same amount of time time to drive back to town. It takes about a half hour for the blood to congeal (dry) on his forehead if laying in the front with his head facing up.
McCoy drove to the Walker’ home and banged on the door for help. Eleven year old Jim Walker opened it and stared at the young man whose face was streaming with blood. Carla’s parents listened in horror as Rodney tried to explain what had happened.
It would sound really convincing to the police who took it for granted that Rodney McCoy was telling the truth.
The drive through restaurant was located on REAGAN DR.just across from the auto parts store and CHAPEL AVE.
he name of the drive-in restaurant was known as the Kuntz's Drive-In formally A&W.
might be wrong, but Ithink the drive-in burned to the ground due to a grease fire.

Keeping the Heat on Murder
To the editor: I read with interest the article Cold Case Firefight (Dec. 5, 2002). My interest stems from my own efforts to solve the 1974 murder of Carla Walker, featured in your paper on April 25, 2002 (Murder & Obsession).
Like Hector Carrillo, I, too, contacted the Texas attorney generals office, as well as the Texas Rangers a few years ago. This was done only after I felt the Fort Worth police did not plan to provide any help to the family of the murder victim. Failing to obtain any help from either of those agencies, I turned to the news media. There was a lot of attention to the Carla Walker murder over the years, and it was named the 1974 story of the year by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
All who were involved then in the investigation of Carlas murder are now retired or deceased. After I retired in 1986, the police department slammed the door in my face, and an order was issued not to provide me with information. I continued my efforts after retirement and was able to provide information that helped solve a rape in Abilene and set free a man wrongfully convicted of assault in Fort Worth. Both these crimes were committed by the person I suspect murdered Carla Walker.
The citizens of Fort Worth, especially victims families, should have the best efforts by those now holding the responsibility of solving cases, both current and those from years past. The Walker case is now in the hands of the Texas Rangers, who have formed a new Cold Case Unit, featured in the July 7, 2002, issue of Fort Worth Weekly (Heating Up Cold Cases). It is a known fact that police departments have more cases than investigators can handle. For that reason, they should welcome anyone who is willing to help, especially retired people with experience and time to contribute. Authorities should be made aware that closed doors and lack of interest will not be accepted.

I wonder where J.F. Terrell got his information or did he make it all up! (assumed) and after close to forty years has not been sovled!

Googling gives me nothing that hasn't already been brought up.
However, reading back over the thread, I noticed that people were distrustful of Rodney's story that they stopped so Carla could use the toilets when the place they stopped was only a few blocks from home. The suggestion that they might have stopped to make out makes that part of the story immediately a lot more believable to me.......
