BOCA RATON - Five people were attacked by a pit bull that suddenly became aggressive early Saturday just west of Boca Raton.

One man and three women were taken to Boca Raton Community Hospital with minor injuries.

The owner of the dog, who was also attacked, refused medical care, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said Saturday.

Catalina Medina was walking her poodle when Julia Reichardt approached with her pit bull on a leash.

When the pit bull became aware of the smaller dog, it suddenly became so aggressive that Reichardt had trouble holding the larger dog back, the sheriff's report said.

Concerned about a possible attack, Medina threw herself on top of her poodle.

About that time, the leashed pit bull broke away from its owner and attacked Medina and her dog, the report said.

Reichardt tried to stop her dog from attacking, but the pit bull turned on her and bit her as well.

Three people who were in the area tried to stop the attack. They, too, were bitten by the attacking dog, the report said.

The poodle was taken to an animal hospital and was expected to survive.

Animal Care and Control removed the pit bull from its owner's home shortly after the attack and cited Reichardt for failing to control her dog, according to the report.

I would have thrown myself over my smaller dog as well. Any dog can be unpredictable.

We were just discussing this issue a couple of days ago, All animals are unpredictable, and people who have a strong dogs like that, should have the proper harness and leash and a fucken taser. I have a couple of very strong dogs and bought a proper harness for control online from ezydog.com, it's a little pricey but def works.

We had a 165lb Rott. He broke a metal training collar before he was full grown. He never went in public without a muzzle (it was cloth). Not because he was mean, but because we weren't going to take chances on such a large dog. He was the biggest sweetie in the world and gentle to his last day. But even a playful nip from him could have hurt.

My German Shepherd is a bit nuts, so we are very careful with him. He is about 75 lbs and I would die if he hurt another person or animal.

Further evidence that there is nothing 'wrong' with this breed.
