Chi Quang Du had been stalking his ex-girlfriend for a couple of months. When she asked him to stop, he allegedly told her, "You don't believe I'll kill you, do you?"

On October 28, 1997 Du's former girlfriend and a male friend were studying at the library at Wright State University. When the two students took a break to hit the vending machines, Du was there.

The couple decided to escape to the parking lot, but Du wouldn't give up that easily. Cops say Du grabbed the woman and held a knife to her throat. When her friend moved to try to help her, Du allegedly sliced the girl's neck and stabbed her in the stomach.

According to police, as the girl fell to the ground, Du brutally stabbed her friend. Cops say Du's two victims lay there and didn't move -- and with Du believing they were

Man gets 20 years for stabbing ex-girlfriend, another man at WSU
XENIA – Chi Quang Du received the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for the stabbing of his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend as they left the Wright State University’s Dunbar Library 13 years ago.

Greene County Common Pleas Court Judge J. Timothy Campbell gave Du the maximum sentence for a guilty plea and verdict of two counts of attempted aggravated murder.

Du’s attorney, Jay Adams, asked Campbell for leniency because his client had no criminal record before or since the time of the attack. Du stabbed Thuy Mai and her new boyfriend Eric Borton Oct. 28, 1997 in the library parking lot.

After the attack Du fled to Seattle and crossed into British Colombia and then made his way to a Toronto suburb where he lived for 12 years until he was caught working as a manger of a cellular phone store.

On December 22, Chi Quang Du, was captured in Ontario, Canada, working at a electronics boutique after police were tipped. Du was wanted for the double stabbing attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend and a male friend outside of a library at Wright State University in 1997. Chi Quang Du was still wearing the jewelry he took off his victims a decade before.

She had a narrow escape there.

“I decided to play dead,” Mai testified. She said Du told her: “If I can’t have you, no one can have you! Die! Die!”

And for some reason, in court it became an issue whether he meant to kill the new boyfriend or not......


Adams told the jury Du was willing to take responsibility for his actions, but not for the attempted murder of Borton, which he never intended to commit. “There is never any more contact with him after he fends him off,” Adams said.

Hayes, rebuking the claim that Du was taking responsibility, said, “People who are responsible for what they do, do not run away in the darkness of night.”

Campbell sentenced Du to the maximum of 20 years in prison Friday, March 26, for the knife attack on Du’s ex-girlfriend Thuy Mai and her new boyfriend Eric Borton as they left the Wright State University Dunbar Library in 1997.

Assistant Prosecutor Cheri Stout said Du had no remorse for his crimes and intended to murder both of his victims. “But for the interruption of innocent bystanders we would be here for a different reason,” Stout said. “He dispatched them with brutal efficiency.”

Du cut Mai’s throat and stabbed her repeatedly on Oct. 28, 1997. When Borton came to her aid, Du sliced his face and stabbed him twice in the abdomen.
