I stumbled upon this really nifty retro-site today, and I thought I'd pass it along. It's about all the things that scared us as kids in movies and TV.

I was scared by the Chuckie movies. Seriously.

I was also scared of the PSA that aired at 10 PM (curfew in Milwaukee). The male TV anchor voice (kinda like James Earl Jones saying "This is CNN") would say "It's now 10 PM. Do you know where your children are?" My little kid mind couldn't conceive of teenage kids staying out late willingly, so I always assumed all the children whose parents didn't know where they were had been kidnapped. Like 10:00 is some magic time--if your kid isn't here by now, probably kidnapped!

Off the top of my head.....

Grasshoppers, scared the shit outta me. BAD. My mom knew of this intense fear and would tell me that there would be huge evil grasshoppers in Hell, so I'd better be good so I'd go in the Rapture. Fucked up penecostals my parents were.

Water. Water that's dark.....at night. Pools at night. Large bodies of water.

Centepides. :scared2: This is a full blown phobia and still is. I have an intense emotional and physical reaction to them. I don't even want to dwell on them.

Any confined or tight space. Bad bad bad bad bad. For punishment my mom would at times lock me in a dark small closet.....this is where this fear comes from I think.....and that's related to the centipede phobia.....there were sometimes bugs and centipedes in there.

Oh there's more.

Movie wise. My mom and I watched some horror movie that had a womans head in some jar and it would talk. That one REALLY scared me!!

Amityville gave me nightmares. That damn pig Jody. My mom would hum that creepy refrain from the movie when I'd go into the basement to do laundry etc. UHG.

I was told I was scared of Darth Vadar, I don't remember this. I was 6 when we saw it in the theaters in 1977.

My first grade teacher - I was terrified of her. She had a foot high platinum blonde beehive, pale white skin and dark red lipstick. She reminded me of a witch and she wasn't nice, either. She told my mother I was too shy, but really I was too scared of her to say a word.

When I was really little, my blankets had static and I could actually see sparks from it. Used to scare the bejesus outta me. My mother didn't know what my problem was - either she didn't believe me or I was too little to explain.

Also scared of the sound of my mother snapping her belt...

I'm going with grasshoppers. Those things still scare me! I have been tortured at the hands of family members and friends...fuckers would chase me with grasshoppers till I had a heart attack or peed my pants.

Fear of getting pooped on by birds gave me plenty of sleepless nights as a youngster. I was looking up at a tree and a bird shit on my cheek...way too close to my mouth. I was traumatized, for years.

Water continues to scare me. Not a swimmer and don't have much confidence in life-jackets.

And, my dad's friend Ralph. While he never did anything to me, he invaded my nightmares with his creepiness.

I always thought I was the only one afraid of grasshoppers!! As a kid growing up in South Dakota you are taught to Always be alert for rattlesnakes.. and my little bitty brain translated noisy grasshoppers into the buzzing of a rattlesnake, I would literally be struck dumb with fear walking through tall grass.. so I guess you could say Grasshoppers, Rattlesnakes, and tall grass all traumatized me.. I also hated being alone in the dark outside.

Earwigs! I was brushing up leaves in the garden and lifted the yard brush above my head , an earwig fell out and landed in my hair . I squealed and swore it bit my ear , but it probably didn't . I loved horror films etc , especially the Freddy and Chucky ones . Watching them now is just funny though , all those effects that looked great at the time are awful lol !

Aw jeees I can't believe I'm going to admit this:

The Easter Bunny...now I'll explain as you are all picking yourselves off the floor with laughter. You know the people who dress up like The Easter Bunny and Santa and any other cute characters? Well I hated them. My mom had to tell me at 2 that my dad was actually Santa because I was scared of a man dressed up coming into my room on Chrtimas Eve. Now I WANT a man to come into my room on Christmas Eve. I also punched the Easter Bunny in the head when my mom took me to see him at the mall.

There I've said it...man I have issues.

Jeez... it would have to be the hair cut I got when I went into kindergarden I idolized my grandmother and so I got her hair cut. Well it was beyond short and after I got it I was teased for years that I was a boy. So from then after I have never had short hair.

The movie "The Blob" (original one). After I watched it, I went to bed. In the dark I saw my white sheet with dark "something" on it. Screamed bloody murder. Seems I had a hole in my top sheet and my hand accidentally went through it. Scared of blobs even after I realized it was my own hand. I know there still are blobs under my bed.

I don't know if this counts but I will share anyways. I absolutely do not allow the presence of jellybeans in my home or anywhere near me. The sight of them instantly nauseate me. When I was thirteen I was visiting relatives and got a horrible stomach virus. Prior to the virus I had eaten one of those enormous bags of jelly beans that Jelly Belly makes (you know the one with like 100 different flavors). I puked jelly beans for 8 hours. I still remember gazing down at them in the toilet bowl (a big tie dye of gastric juices) and swearing to myself I would never eat a jelly bean ever again if the pain in my stomach would go away.
I also have an absurd phobia of lizards. My cousin would chase me when I was a small child and hang them from my ears. If a lizard is within a three foot proximity I will literally burst into tears.
I know I'm crazy.

Papercuts. I don't know why, but they scare the shit out of me. I can barely hold paper.

And that horror movie from the 80s where the serial killer goes through the tv into other peoples houses. I can't remember the name of it but it was the only scary movie I didn't like.

Robert Stacks voice on Unsolved Mysteries, the creepy fucker.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space. I was already a little afraid of clowns, but for some dumb reason, this movie sent me over the edge. My mom refused to tell my grandma I was scared of clowns, so Grandma kept sending me stuffed clowns, and one of them played music. The stupid thing would go off in the middle of the night, and I used to convince myself that the music was getting closer and closer and closer until I'd get up and run into my brother's room (he was closest).

You're in luck, it's never been released on DVD. It was going to be, but there is a really fucked up story behind it. So yeah, you're safe! It was about these escapees from the loony bin who kill these clowns, and dress up as them and go terrorize this boy and his friends.

My biggest fear when I was little was I being afraid that somebody was hiding behind the closed shower curtain in the bathroom. I would throw it open and yell really loud figuring I would scare them before they would scare me!

I was afraid of the movie, The Ghost and Mr Chicken, because I never got to watch the end. Don Knotts was in that.

Scared myself with Amityville Horror and was afraid of drug addicts with needles in bushes on my way home from school. I have no idea where that came from. Oh and Alf!

Now I am afraid of
IRS
Swat
Count seat council
Obama

I drowned in ocean when I was kid. I watched Jaws. I refuse touch ocean with my feet. I have a fear that shark or the wave will grab me, drag me into the ocean. I like to watch ocean but I will not go in ocean. Not just ocean, lake too. Whenever I stand in lake, I will freak out. Because I can't see what's in brown shit.

I hate bugs. I have big bug phobia. Ladybug on my hand, I will burst into tears.

In second grade a kid told everyone about Bloody Mary. It scared me so bad I would not use the bathroom at school because of all the mirrors. I would only sleep with my back facing the wall in fear she would rip my heart out through my back. It stuck with me for many many years.

spiders....clowns...little kids running around the playground with runny noses, they really scared me. Also, apparently I was scared of some Glad garbage bag commercial. It was some little kid kicking a garbage bag down the street (don't ask me why, I can't remember why it was scary).

My first grade teacher scared the piss out of me after she washed a kid's mouth out with dish soap in front of the whole class

This Halloween, it was brought to my attention Bloody Mary originated about 12 miles from me. I was freaked all over again!

That scene in To Kill a Mockingbird where the little girl was dressed up like a ham for Halloween and was attacked in the woods. I think I was as traumatized by the notion of dressing like a ham as I was at the thought of being attacked by an adult in the woods.

Worms. I was terrified of worms. My older siblings were teenagers when I was a toddler - they used my fear of worms to their full advantage, to keep me away. Whether it was my sister wanting to make out with her boyfriend behind the shed (you don't want to come out here, there are WORMS!) or my brother wanting to go hang out with his friends at Burger King (they chop up WORMS! and put them in the hamburgers!) or whatever, finding a way to inset WORMS! into the activity was a foolproof way to do whatever they wanted without their three year old sister following them.

I couldn't eat at Burger King for like 10 years because of that. And worms still make my skin crawl.

Clowns. Because I watched the movie "IT" by Stephen King and Pennywise freaked me out completely and I still have nightmares about him.

And a book called "Salem's Lot". It was about vampires, it was my mom's and I read it and had nightmares about the naked housewife who showed up at peoples doors and attacked them!!
