A Jackson police officer shot a driver after a traffic stop turned into an altercation.
Jackson Police Department spokesman Lt. Jeffery Scott said the officer, whom he would not name, tried to pull over a man in a Kia Spectrum for a minor traffic offense.
"Once the officer approached the driver, there was an altercation. Our initial investigation reveals the driver attempted to use the vehicle as a weapon and run over the officer," Scott said.
The driver was identified as 27-year-old Milton Grant. The officer shot Grant in the buttock with his service weapon, Scott said.
"Even though he was injured, Grant managed to run and later was found behind a house in the 1300 block of Oak Park Drive," the lieutenant said.
Grant was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center and may be charged with aggravated assault on a police officer once he is released.
