A Hazleton woman was arrested for allegedly failing to get medical attention for her daughter for a week after the child suffered a severe burn.
Dr. Gerald Coleman III told police that Mary Deoleo, 21, brought her 3-year-old daughter to the hospital’s emergency room with a severe burn to the buttocks.
Coleman said Deoleo told him she was preparing her daughter for a shower three days earlier when the child accidentally fell against a space heater. Deoleo later changed her story, and said the little girl fell asleep against the heater.
A picture of the burn, which covered the entire right buttocks area, was shown to police. The girl was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital for advanced treatment.
Deoleo told police she did not have a telephone in her home nor access to a cell phone. She also told them that she did not get medical attention for the child even after Deoleo’s boyfriend came home and the phone in her home was restored.
Deoleo said that she became increasingly concerned when the child’s clothing became stuck to the wound, and each time the clothing moved, the wound would open up. The child would not get medical attention for another two days.
Deoleo admitted the burn actually occurred on Dec. 12, two days earlier than she had first reported.
Deoleo knew each day since then that the girl needed medical attention, but was afraid the child would be taken away from her.
When asked if she would seek medical attention if she had a similar wound herself, the woman replied yes.
Deoleo also admitted to police that on several occasions during the seven-day period, she was in the company of other people, and could have reached out for help, but did not.
And even with the burn being very painful, Deoleo said she gave the child a pain reliever on only one occasion.http://www.standardspeaker.com/articles/2008/12/20/news/hz_standspeak.20081220.a.pg3.hz20_childburned_s1.2 176233_top5.txt
