"A 16-year old boy raped and killed a woman he didn't know while he was in a fit of rage, Phoenix police said.
Jose Quintero was angry because his girlfriend had just broken up with him, police investigators said.
Quintero attacked Helen Coulter, 39, dragged her to an empty lot, beat and kicked her to death and left her naked body in the field, according to police reports.
Her body was found last Saturday in a field near 22nd Street and Broadway Road.
Quintero was booked into a juvenile facility on charges of first-degree murder, sexual assault and kidnapping.
The Maricopa County Attorney's Office is deciding whether to charge him as an adult. Arizona law mandates that the county attorney charge a minor as an adult if he or she is at least 15 years old and is accused of first or second-degree murder, forcible sexual assault, armed robbery or a variety of other violent felony offenses.
The county Attorney's Office has 48 hours from arrest to file a criminal complaint or take the matter to a grand jury.
Phoenix police Detective Cindy Scott said investigators declined to reveal how they linked Quintero to the murder. The boy and victim did not know each other prior to the attack, police said.
Coulter lived elsewhere but had friends in the area. Scott said Coulter was walking in a residential neighborhood when confronted by Quintero. "The attack basically came from a fit of rage," Scott said.
Scott could not provide a timeline of events but said Quintero attacked Coulter and at some point took her to the vacant lot where her body was discovered.
