A Refugio County man is in jail charged with child abuse after he's accused of burning a baby's face with a hot utensil on purpose.
Investigators said it's a disturbing case. They said a man burned the toddler for no other reason than being jealous of the child.
Lt. Rodney Cox of the Refugio County Sheriff's Department said he's never seen a case like this before in his career.
Investigators said Jose Jesus Castillo, 31, burned him purposely.
"It hurts to look at them," said Lt. Cox. "They are horrific. This child is going to be scarred for the rest of his life."
At first, Castillo told them the child got scratched at this Woodsboro home. After talking to him, they figure out what he did.
"It just leads me to believe the fork was placed directly on that particular spot and that only spot," Lt. Cox said. "Nothing else."
The child was the grandchild of Castillo's girlfriend and they lived together at this home. Investigators said her relationship with her grandchild led to this attack.
"I think he's jealous of the little one because the little one gets to spend more time with the girlfriend," said Lt. Cox.
Investigators said Castillo never showed any remorse for burning the small child.
"The fact that people are going to view him as a monster," Lt. Cox. "I think that's what he's upset about. Is he sad because he hurt the baby? I don't believe so."
Authorities said Castillo is charged with injury to a child and aggravated assault. If convicted, he could face up to 99 years in prison. Investigators said he should face the maximum sentence for this crime.
"There's no excusable way," said Lt. Cox.. "Am I being too tough? Yes I am because he shouldn't have been that way with a 14 month old child that couldn't defend himself."
