CNN) -- In early October, Starla Darling was just days away from giving birth to her second child. The 27-year-old mother from Polk, Ohio, had a well-paying job with good health insurance at the Archway Cookie plant in nearby Ashland.

But during a visit to her parents' house, Darling received news that sent her into a panic. A neighbor, who also worked at Archway, told them the plant was closing and their health insurance was ending two days later.
"I flipped out," Darling said. "It was five minutes after she told me, I was on the phone with the doctor," Darling said. "I told her, 'I need to be induced.'"
A few hours later, Darling was in the hospital. The next day, she had to have an emergency C-section. Darling was angry and disappointed. "I was supposed to have water labor. I wanted everything to be natural. I was forced into something I did not want to do."
After the mad rush to give birth (http://topics.cnn.com/topics/Pregnancy_and_Childbirth) to baby Kathryn, Darling got some more bad news. A bill for nearly $18,000 arrived from the hospital. Even though Darling gave birth before she says she was told her insurance was supposed to run out, the company denied the claim. She also says it denied other claims from earlier in the year. She wonders where the money went. "I paid $67 a week out of my check," she says, exasperated.

This health insurance crap is pure lunacy. Good luck fixing this mess, Obama. You're gonna need it.

My sister did this. She was losing her insurance on December 1st of 2001 so she had her labor induced November 30th. He was born in like 4 hours, lucky for her due date was close but this shit does happen.

Obama is a joke. He could not fix a peanut-butter sandwich. What about the Annenberg Challenge? He was elected to the U.S. Senate running against Alan Keyes! Why do you think he has to surround himself with all of these geniuses?

Yeah, I get the "Hope Change" repetitive nonsense. It got old pretty quickly. I'm optimistic about his presidency. Which I'm sure sickens you. I don't think he could do worse than George W, but that's not really saying much. That man can't even say "nuclear" without looking like an idiot.

For the record I think this "shit happens" attitude is why America is in this predicament to begin with. We put up with too much because we feel powerless.

They put up with too much because they don't really care. Just so long as they don't miss America's Fattest Gay Bachelor or Monday Night Football.

You are 100% right. As sad as the truth is, that really made me laugh.

I want to point out I said "this shit happens." As in I gave you one example (my sister) of it happening but because of the socioeconomic group I was born into I could probably give you numerous examples. "This shit happens." As in this is not the first time and won't be the last, not that I am complacent about it in any way. And even though she types fast and got the quote wrong I am sure that is what The Little Friend meant also.:hello:

No, I gotcha. I do feel that a lot of people are complacent about it though. Not you or LF specifically. The "shit happens" remark was just a way of accenting my point.

Wow, that really fuck'n sucks. A women basically forced into induction to cover costs and still gets a huge bill...something really wrong with that, complete bullshit. She should get every dime she put in to her policy back and then some....hey, I can dream, they can't take that away.

And yet folks seem to think that government run healthcare is going to be a cure all. If they can't even run Medicare right, I prefer self-paid insurance. I've had more fights with Medicare over my parents coverage than i care to count. The thought of them running my coverage sends me into a panic. I don't have time for that crap.

Would someone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE explain to me why Government run Health Care is going to be the one thing they can do right?
DV is right, if they could get medicare right, then I might have a different opinion.

Insurance is bad because you pay into it and then when you need it, they'll find some reason to drop you. Anything run by the government is a pain in the ass. I had Medicaid and I know what a hassle these programs are. There's no perfect solution and you're not gonna make everyone happy.

Trust me, she can fight this. And she will win. I deal with this stuff all day long 5-6 days a week. If she was still covered at the point the baby was born, then they have to pay the bill.
They will of course try not to pay, and some people are too tired and lazy so the insurance company gets away with it. You have to fight for your rights people.................

Peeper is right.
She should fight it. They would love for you to pay. My Sis is an administrator for a hospital and came from the claims dept. Deciding who gets a pass and who has to pay is subjective and negotiable. She says squeaky wheel gets the grease.
Fight it everytime. It is the insurance companies goal to initially deny everything.
They are greedy fuckers in it for the money right?!!! The real question is "who is letting them get away with it?".
Thats another thread though.
