One of the bailiffs working the Robert Sparks capital murder trial (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/121008dnmetsparksupdate.4ca40d2d.html)has a thing for ties. On the opening day of the two-week trial, the bailiff wore a black tie with a bright red devil's face on it. When the jury began Wednesday deliberating his sentence - to die by lethal injection or life with no parole chances - he wore a black one with a needle on it.
I hear that when a defense attorney complained about it, state District Judge Robert Francis told the bailiff to tuck it inside his shirt. That's the way it remained the remainder of the day.
Bailiffs escort jurors to and from their waiting room and the defendant to and from his holding cell.
