Chase Barton was being held in the Dallas County Jail and faces a charge of manslaughter. He is accused of killing Karina Alvarez-Castro, 19.
It happened about 4:30 a.m. at Barton’s apartment. Police say Barton pulled out the gun’s magazine, and, thinking it wasn’t loaded, pulled the trigger.
The bullet struck Ms. Alvarez-Castro, piercing her upper torso from back to front.
“So she must have had her back turned toward him … when he pulled the trigger,” Sgt. Beaudreault said.
Ms. Alvarez-Castro was rushed to Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, where she later died.
Investigators found marijuana and hashish in the apartment, and the sergeant said Barton slurred his words and appeared intoxicated during questioning.
Barton has been in trouble with guns and drugs before. He was sentenced to jail in 2006 after police pulled over a car he was riding in and found marijuana and a loaded revolver in his pockets.
