Robert Lee Adams Reaves, who served as a bishop with the Living In Favor Global Network Churches in Goldsboro, is charged with murdering Latrese Curtis. Curtis was stabbed to death in January, and her body was dumped along Interstate 540.
Investigators think Reaves had made sexual advances toward his roommate, Steven Lamont Randolph, who was dating Curtis. Randolph rebuffed Reaves, who killed Curtis in retaliation.
"It is the state's theory that the deceased became an obstacle to the defendant's desires to be with Mr. Randolph," Assistant District Attorney Howard Cummings said.
Cummings said investigators have evidence that Reaves made unsuccessful advances toward other male friends and took revenge on their girlfriends.
The prosecutor did not say where the killing occurred. But he said that after killing Curtis, Reaves went to a store and bought a turkey roaster, stuffed it with the clothes he was wearing during the attack and set the garments afire.
Shortly before midnight that night, a N.C. Highway Patrol trooper saw Reaves' Chrysler Pacifica parked alongside Interstate 540. Cummings said the unoccupied vehicle was directly across the road from Curtis' vehicle and less than a mile from where her body was found. She had been stabbed more than 40 times.
Wake County sheriff's deputies questioned Randolph soon after finding Curtis' body. Reaves drove Randolph to the sheriff's office in downtown Raleigh for questioning. But investigators began to focus on Reaves after noticing cuts on his hands and inconsistencies about his whereabouts the night before.
Reaves told investigators he was at a church service that night. But investigators reviewed a video of the service and Reaves was not there. Church leaders also recalled that Reaves was not at the service.http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/1323198.html
