"LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Bettie Page, one of the most notable models of the 20th century, is hospitalized in intensive care after suffering a heart attack in Los Angeles.

Mark Roesler, Page's agent and attorney, says Friday that the 85-year-old is "critically ill." He says she suffered a heart attack Tuesday and remains hospitalized.

He would not comment further on her condition.

Page is credited with helping set the stage for the sexual revolution of the rebellious 1960s. She attracted national attention with magazine photographs of her sensuous figure in bikinis and lingerie that were tacked up on walls in military barracks, garages and elsewhere.

Page grew up in a conservative religious family in Tennessee before becoming an erotic icon with legions of devoted fans. Her provocative poses eventually drew the attention of a Senate investigation into pornography in the 1950s."

"Bettie Page, the brunet pinup queen with a shoulder-length pageboy hairdo and kitschy bangs whose saucy photos helped usher in the sexual revolution of the 1960s, has died. She was 85.

Page, whose later life was marked by depression, violent mood swings and several years in a state mental institution, died at a Los Angeles hospital where she had been on life support since she had a heart attack on Dec. 2, according to her agent, Mark Roesler. A cult-culture figure, Page was most famous for the estimated 20,000 4-by-5-inch black-and-white glossy photographs taken by amateur shutterbugs from 1949 to 1957.

“Exactly what captures the imagination of people in terms of popular culture is something hard to define,” Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner once said of Page. “But in Bettie’s case, I’d say it’s a combination of wholesome innocence and fetish-oriented poses that is at once retro and very modern.”

The Times will post a full obituary of Page soon."

How very sad to have lost such a beautiful part of American consciousness. Betty Page was a beautiful, tragic figure, and she will always be remembered.

Women like this that cross boundaries and pave way for others, as she has, have my respect to the highest degree. I'm not saddened with the news of her death. She lived a long life as she should have. I am, however, glad that she has gone into a better place. RIP Sweet Bettie

edit: Check out that last photo. She's wearing that trademark smile as bright as ever. She went in a good way.
