Amber Alert, Baby kidnapped when van stolen

An Amber Alert was issued for a 7-month-old boy who was in his mother's minivan when it was stolen outside her workplace in Chicago.

Illinois State Police are searching for Osial Hernandez, who was apparently inadvertently kidnapped during a car theft on the northwest side of the city some time between 3:30 and 5 a.m. Friday.

His mother, who has a newspaper delivery route, left her infant son in her warm, idling vehicle while she ran inside the distribution center to collect more papers. She reportedly didn't want him to get cold.

When she emerged, the minivan and her baby boy were gone. The child is believed to be in a light green, 2003 Dodge Caravan, with Illinois license plate number X53 3131.

The Amber Alert describes the boy as a Hispanic baby with brown hair and eyes.

I remember picking my son up from school and the after school care directors telling me if I did not bring in my younger daughter too they would have no choice but to call DCF on me. I felt really stupid when they said "someone could steal your car and take her". As attentive as I am to my kids, I NEVER thought of that. I just didn't want her to get cold. I felt so guilty for never thinking someone could easily steal my car if I left it unattended for the minute and a half I was in there getting him. Oh, just typing it makes me feel bad all over again!

Jesus, I hope this little baby is returned soon. The asswipe who stole the car has no need for the baby...bring him back safely!

I'm sure the mother feels like a complete idiot...I pray this ends well.

He has been found safe.


CHICAGO (AP) - Police say a 7-month-old boy who was abducted when his mother's minivan was stolen on the city's northwest side has been found and is safe.

Illinois State Police issued an Amber Alert for Osial Hernandez early Friday. He was believed to be in a light green, 2003 Dodge Caravan. Chicago police say the kidnapping happened at about 3:30 a.m.

The Amber Alert described the child as a Hispanic baby with brown hair and eyes.

Chicago police spokeswoman JoAnn Taylor says the boy was found late Friday afternoon and is safe.

She says police are still looking for the offender.

Thank God that this baby was found safe. There was a case several years ago where someone had stolen a car with a baby in it. Thay dumped the baby on the side of a fairly isolated highway, in a ditch! The baby probably would not have been found but a woman spotted something odd in the ditch as she and her husband drove by. Thank God that the baby was found safe then as well. I can't remember if the pricks who left the baby out there to die were ever caught.
Hey, we ALL have done some dumb things like leaving a baby in the car so they wouldn't get cold. Live and learn. But, hopefully, learn when reading of others mistakes and avoid your own. This should be required in all parenting courses if it isn't already. And included in life skills classes in school.
