"The Clark County Coroner's office has exhumed the body of a little girl who died more than a decade ago.
Prosecutors say they are hoping to prove Kierra Harrison was killed by daycare worker in 1997.
"She was such a little imp," says Kierra's grandma, Pamela Rowse "She was bright. She was inquisitive."
At 14 months old, Kierra died from massive head trauma.
Her family is convinced her caretaker is behind it."

So the childminder has been out and about all this time ?

What do they expect to find after all this time that was not found then?
Is this a case of the child-minder having hurt or killed another child so that suspicions of the time now seem to have more foundation?

Wow, this is pretty sad and its been an ongoing court battle since it started in 1997. They already convicted the daycare worker Alica Wegner of killing Kierra in 1998 but the Nevada Supreme Court overturned her conviction in 2000 and she was set free.
Kierra's family have spent 11 years trying to get justice for her. There are a few good things that came out of this though. The "Kierra Harrison Foundation for Child Safety" was formed and has been very active in trying to prevent anymore daycare deaths.
Wegner was convicted of killing Kierra in 1998, but the Nevada Supreme Court overturned the conviction. Wegner has been free on bail pending a new murder trial.
Kierra died in March 1997, two days after being under Wegner's care.
Experts who testified during Wegner's trial said Kierra probably was hurt when she was with Wegner. But an expert for Wegner's defense testified that the girl might have been hurt several days earlier.

Abroad, I dont think so, this case is more about the injury Kierra died from. The daycare worker's defence is, the baby already had the injury before the baby came to the daycare. And the new autopsy is to gather more evedence about the injury to prove the daycare worker did it. The autopsy was done more than 10 years ago so there useing newer equipment to examine the wound better.

Thanks for answering in such detail. You might end up regretting it, though:
Now I am wondering why the conviction was overturned and what the injury was, since there is disagreement about how early it was inflicted on her? :stupido3: :stupido3:

What a beautiful baby. I just don't think I could keep it together if someone did something like this to my child...she would be dead by my hand.
Rest in peace baby Kierra, it is clear you are still loved and remembered.

If the daycare worker did do this, I hope that she gets life without parole.
I do not think that the family would have pressed it this long if they had done it. So I honestly believe that it HAD to be the childcare worker.

Even if it was not done at day care the day care worker would have had the responsibility to report it to authorities.
But I on the other hand think thats a crock of shit. Shes guilty as sin.

She takes a plea

Alica Wegner, 44, agreed to plead guilty in the slaying of Kierra Harrison, who died on March 5, 1997 from massive head trauma. Wegner, who had cared for Kierra two days before she died, was blamed in the killing.
"For her family's sake, she needed some closure," her attorney, Robert Langford, said Friday. "The risk of going to trial, being convicted and then going through the appellate process would place too great a strain on them."
Wegner, who has always maintained her innocence, entered what's known as an Alford plea on Thursday. This type of plea means she doesn't admit wrongdoing but that prosecutors have enough evidence to prove their case. She was scheduled to go to trial at the end of July.
As part of the plea, she agreed to be sentenced to either 10 years to life in prison or 10 to 25 years in prison, Langford said.

Wegner, who is currently free on bail, has always maintained her innocence. She is set to surrender on July 24 to authorities. She is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 10.
Wegner was convicted in 1998 of killing Kierra and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 20 years.
But the Nevada Supreme Court overturned the conviction in 2000 and granted her a new trial.
Justices objected to jury instructions stating that a killing by child abuse is first-degree murder regardless of whether the killing was intentional. They also ruled that the judge should have granted a defense request that jurors be permitted to consider a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter.
Wegner has already served three years in prison, so she could be eligible for parole after seven years.

TOTAL FAIL. Justice was blind on this one.
Such a beautiful child.
