A Kutztown University student was arraigned Friday on charges he raped a female student with whom he had been friends after she passed out drunk in the bedroom of his off-campus apartment.
Christopher B. Ratican, 26, of the 600 block of Briar Circle South, Kutztown, was arrested by borough police after an arrest warrant was signed Thursday by District Judge Gail M. Greth, Fleetwood.
Police did not say where Ratican was arrested.
Ratican was committed to Berks County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail following arraignment before Senior District Judge Richard A. Gatti in Reading Central Court.
He was charged with rape, sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault and related counts.
The victim, a 20-year-old woman whose name is being withheld by the Reading Eagle, reported the assault to hospital personnel at Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown, where she went a few hours after discovering she had been raped Oct. 2.
According to police:
Hospital personnel called police, who interviewed the woman in the hospital.
She told an officer that some of her roommates were friends with Ratican and some of his roommates and they would often hang out in one another's apartments.
The night before the alleged assault, the woman and her friends, including Ratican, drank large amounts of alcohol to celebrate one of the friend's 21st birthday.
About 1:30 the next morning, the woman, who was heavily intoxicated, walked with two of her female friends and Ratican to his apartment to paint floral designs on his bedroom wall, something they had been doing periodically.
One of the female friends left the room and the woman and her other female friend laid on the bed and eventually fell asleep.
As some point, the remaining female friend left, with the woman and Ratican alone and asleep on the bed.
About 7:30 a.m., the woman awoke to find Ratican sexually assaulting her. She pushed him away and got up.
It was unclear why police waited nearly seven weeks to file charges.
