A Pecan Grove man arrested Friday night is suspected in the grisly murder of a Houston woman who was found stuffed in a culvert.
Steven Oliver, 21, of the 1300 block of Roundstone Drive, is being held in Fort Bend County Jail in Richmond in lieu of $500,000 bond. At present he is charged only with tampering with evidence.
Chief Fort Bend County Sheriff's Deputy Craig Brady said Saturday the charge resulted from Oliver cleaning up blood and hiding a woman's body.
The dead woman has been identified as Michelle Barhas, 25, of southwest Houston. Brady said her body was discovered after sheriff's deputies removed a manhole cover near Roundstone and Quarterpath drives in Pecan Grove, went down about 4 feet and then turned east and went about 9 feet into a culvert.
Barhas appeared to have been stabbed multiple times, "primarily in the neck," Brady said.
Oliver told sheriff's detectives the woman, who was estranged from her husband, committed suicide, Brady said. However, he added, by my experience the wounds are not consistent with suicide."
Police found the woman's body after a neighbor alerted them. The woman told detectives she thought she saw a tall, thin white man dragging a body near Roundstone and Quarterpath drives, Friday at about 4:30 a.m. when she was on her way to work.
About 12 hours later, after returning home from work, the neighbor went to the intersection, saw blood on the pavement and called the sheriff's office, Brady said.
Investigators were able to follow the trail of blood both to Barhas' body inside the culvert, and to Oliver's home.
