A teacher at Park View Elementary School noticed the burns and took pictures of the girl's neck.

According to police reports the word WIMP could clearly be seen spelled out on the girls neck. Authorities say the mother even dotted the eye on the word wimp.

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. (AP) — A West Virginia mother faces charges after being accused of burning the word "wimp" into her 6-year-old daughter's neck.

Tammy Smith is charged with five counts of child abuse and of malicious assault, all felonies.

Moundsville Police Chief Jim Kudlak said Saturday that the child told police that her mother used a cigarette to burn her. Smith's daughter told authorities that her mother burned her because she was angered that the girl tripped and fell.

An employee at the child's school noticed the burns and police were called Wednesday. The girl is in foster care.

The 43-year-old Smith is being held in jail on $50,000 bond. Kudlak says he doesn't think she has an attorney yet.

Moundsville is in northern West Virginia.

A grand jury in northern West Virginia has indicted a mother accused of burning the word "wimp" into her 6-year-old daughter's neck with a cigarette.

The indictment, handed up Tuesday in Marshall County, charges 43-year-old Tammy Lynn Smith with 10 counts of child abuse and 10 counts of malicious assault.

Moundsville police say the girl told authorities her mother burned her as punishment after she tripped and fell.

Smith's attorney, Patricia Kurelac, didn't immediately return a telephone message Wednesday.

A medical exam of the girl performed after Smith's Nov. 21 arrest found several other burns.

Smith remains free on bond.

Her daughter has been placed in foster care.

Marshall County Prosecutor Jeff Cramer said he hopes to, "throw the book at her".

Smith is facing some serious charges which include 20 counts which were handed down by the Marshall County Grand Jury.

A break down of the case includes 10 counts of child abuse resulting in injury and 10 counts of malicious wounding, according to Cramer.

"She's got four counts of each for wimp, two felonies for each letter and six others what we believe we can prove there were six other cigarette burns that were performed on the child." Cramer said.

What's even more disturbing about this case is the letter "I" was even dotted on the little girl's neck.

The girl told police her mother did it because she was mad at her for tripping.

A Moundsville woman accused of using a cigarette to burn her 6-year-old daughter is not permitted to visit the girl, a judge ruled Monday.

Tammy Smith previously pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of child abuse and 10 counts of malicious wounding.

Smith's daughter suffered multiple burns on her neck spelling the word "wimp."

On Monday, a Judge mark Karl denied Smith's request for visitation.

"I miss my baby very much," Smith told NEWS9. "It's very hard. It's breaking me up."

The Moundsville mother accused of burning "wimp" into her child's neck is back behind bars - but this time she won't be getting out anytime soon.

Marshall County Prosecutor Jeff Cramer said the $50,000 bond for Tammy Lynn Smith, 43, has been revoked now that she is facing a charge of receiving stolen property.

The charge was filed Tuesday, and Smith was taken to the Northern Regional Jail.

According to Moundsville police, the charge stems from a Saturday incident in which a charcoal grill allegedly was stolen from the Moundsville Kroger.

Officer Don DeWitt said video surveillance showed Billy Joe VanScyoc and Smith walked out of the store with the grill without paying for it.

That same day, officers found the grill in a storage building near the couple's Drummond Avenue residence.

DeWitt said a man working at the storage building claimed Smith stored it there.

The officer added that Smith admitted to storing the grill in the building, claiming she did it "to protect whoever stole it."

VanSycoc also has been charged in connection with incident, Cramer said, but had not been arrested as of Thursday afternoon.
