It's true, folks - Venezuelans voted against socialism! (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071203/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/venezuela_constitution)

"CARACAS, Venezuela - Humbled by his first electoral defeat ever, President Hugo Chavez said Monday he may have been too ambitious in asking voters to let him stand indefinitely for re-election and endorse a huge leap to a socialist state.

"I understand and accept that the proposal I made was quite profound and intense," he said after voters narrowly rejected the sweeping constitutional reforms by 51 percent to 49 percent."

Now, THOSE are the kind of wins Democracy needs under its belt...the kind that doesn't include U.S. military involvement.

Honestly, this news made my day. :)

I must say, I'm a little surprised this passed. Early poll numbers projected otherwise, and though every rational citizen wants to see him drawn and quartered, he still has fairly widespread support. It is good to know though that as deluded as the Latin American left may be, even they have their limits. Or, I should say, and handful of them do. Given what was proposed, the fact that 49% of people still supported his proposal is alarming at best.

Hugo is not much longer for this world, and that is a good thing. What I read on the net, is that his own military is refusing to fire on protesters. That dude is bat shit crazy!

Nice post, thanks:D

And Lefties love the fucker just because he thumbs his nose at the United States. Who cares that he murders the poor, as long as he hates on the rich.

What a bizarre system of ethics.

I forget who the reporter was I saw on msnbc. He said the gas is cheap but there is no milk at the stores. There was chaos in the streets. I was worried about his safety.

Tends to be that way in poorly-run socialist states. Chavez has no interest in helping the totality of his people. His only interests are remaining in power and contradicting the U.S.

I am, by no means, a one-government-fits-all kinda gal. That being said, South American nations need to find a brand of government that works best for them, and it sure as shit doesn't seem to be socialism.
