RIMROCK LAKE, Wash. -- Federal wildlife officials are asking for help in identifying a man considered a person of interest in their investigation of the illegal shooting of rare woodpeckers.

The incident took place in April near Rimrock Lake, when someone shot at least two black-backed woodpeckers, said Brent Lawrence, spokesman for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Portland.

Black-backed woodpeckers are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

The birds were a breeding pair that was part of a research project, and the scientists’ camera recorded an unknown man walking in front of the tree where the birds nested, Lawrence said.

The Fish and Wildlife Service is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to the person or persons responsible for shooting the woodpeckers. Lawrence stressed that the man seen on the video is just considered a person of interest at the time.

The agency waited until now to reach out to the public because it wanted to pursue all other options first, Lawrence said.

Anyone with information can reach wildlife investigators at 425-883-8122. Callers can remain anonymous.

Sounds like a good place to avoid. I wonder if there is a connection?

YAKIMA, Wash. — A 31-year-old man from the Seattle area was transported to a local hospital early Saturday morning after being shot while on a family camping trip at Rimrock Lake.

Around 2 a.m., the man and family members were awakened by the sound of gunshots. The victim was struck in the chest by gunfire from a nearby hillside, the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release issued late Saturday morning. Deputies arrived on the scene shortly after and the man was taken to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released after it was determined his injury was not life threatening.

The victim’s name was not released at his request, said Sgt. Mike Russell in a phone interview.

Investigators checked the hillside and located multiple shell casings as well as a rifle, presumably used to shoot the victim, that had been abandoned. The rifle had previously been reported stolen during a burglary in Yakima on June 16.

The kid in the trailcam in the OP looks like he could be about 17.
