RIMROCK LAKE, Wash. -- Federal wildlife officials are asking for help in identifying a man considered a person of interest in their investigation of the illegal shooting of rare woodpeckers.
The incident took place in April near Rimrock Lake, when someone shot at least two black-backed woodpeckers, said Brent Lawrence, spokesman for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Portland.
Black-backed woodpeckers are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
The birds were a breeding pair that was part of a research project, and the scientists’ camera recorded an unknown man walking in front of the tree where the birds nested, Lawrence said.
The Fish and Wildlife Service is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to the person or persons responsible for shooting the woodpeckers. Lawrence stressed that the man seen on the video is just considered a person of interest at the time.

The agency waited until now to reach out to the public because it wanted to pursue all other options first, Lawrence said.
