called in the attack Sunday afternoon and even tried to beat the pit bulls and pit bull/mix dogs off their owner. When police got there officers knew they couldn't shoot the dogs while they were tugging and biting the woman's limbs and neck and pulling her around the yard.
Specialist Ron Schultz said he fired shots into the ground instead.
It worked to distract two of the dogs who then turned on the officers. One of them was shot and wounded. But the third dog never stopped chewing on owner Tammy Tucker.

"I had to get him off her, he was going to keep eating her." Specialist Schultz said Gutapfel had to get up close to the dog and shoot it while it was still attached to Tucker's arm.
The officers were close by when the calls came in. Schultz says he believes Tucker was close to dying. The officers acknowledge what they did likely saved Tucker's life. One neighbor says this is not the first time Tucker's been attacked by her own dogs.

even though her husband has contacted SPCA about getting the dogs back, SPCA'S Harry Dates says the primary concern is for the community. Dates said, "We may have to go to more extreme measures in the interest of public safety." Tucker is still in intensive care but in stable condition.
