Michael Hickin found a seventeen year old girl hiding in the woods. She asked him for help. He promptly brought her to the hospital. She is still there.

What doctors found is horrendous. She was twenty pounds underweight and losing her hair. She had a broken shoulder and a stab wound. There were two month old infected sores about her body, numerous bruises, and scabs on her feet.

The girl went on to describe significant abuse. The scabs on her feet were from being beaten with a metal pipe. The knife wound was from being stabbed with a pocketknife. The bruises came from being kicked with metal studded boots. The sores from being whipped with a cable all over her body. The broken shoulder should came from being thrown onto the ground with her arm pinned behind her back, and then being sat upon whilst on the floor. She could only eat if she stole food. She wasn't allowed to use the bathroom. The last time she bathed was in March.

33 year old Melissa Peters and 45 year old Kris Peters were arrested. The relationship between the girl and the clearly not wanting for food assholes is not being disclosed. I assume they are foster parents. The abuse had been on going for several months.

According to the Peters all of the wounds were self inflicted. They state that she picks at her feet, hits herself, and stabbed herself when they were trying to take a knife away from her. They also claim the teenager has mental health issues, though admit to not bothering to get help for it.

The Peters are being held without bond. Between the two of them they are charged with ten counts of aggravated child abuse and charges of negligent child abuse with great bodily harm and failure to report child abuse and neglect.

OMG someone please just kill them. This man coming upon her in the woods was her miracle. Thank God he took her to the hospital instead of to her parents. This is so damn sad. Hasn't had a bath or shower since March...only gets food when she gets a chance to steal it. Has to urinate and defecate on herself..not allowed to use the bathroom. Bet this was another case of "homeschooling"...to hide the abuse. I want to wrap her in a hug and never let her go. I hope these two monsters get life in prison. You can tell they never went a day without food. Fuck them.

If she is their foster child then that means they were receiving money to feed and care for her.
That should also be a crime and actually, it is, but I never see those charges.

Agreed. We have a family with SO many foster kids, we refer to it as the clown car when it pulls up to the school each morning. That's all I'm going to say about that family :rolleyes:

Fifteen months after a malnourished and beaten 17-year-old girl was found hiding in the woods near her home, a Dundee woman has pleaded no contest to neglect for her role in causing the girl’s injuries.

Melissa Nicole Peters, 35, faced up to 45 years in prison if she had been convicted of neglect and aggravated child abuse as charged, but under a plea agreement Feb. 2 with prosecutors, she received 15 years’ probation. For her part, Peters has agreed to testify against her husband, Kris Peters, 46, who faces a similar prison term if he’s convicted of aggravated child abuse and neglect.

In November 2016, a passerby, Michael Hickin of Dundee, came upon the girl in the woods near Dundee and summoned help for her.

Prosecutors are withholding the girl’s relationship to the Peterses to protect her identity.

Doctors reported the girl, then 17, weighed only 86 pounds and was losing her hair, which are both signs of severe malnutrition. Her left shoulder was broken, according to Polk County Sheriff’s Office reports, and the infected wounds on her feet appeared to be at least two months old. She also had a black eye and a stab wound to her right shoulder.

She told deputies she’d been the victim of ongoing abuse for several months. She said she was repeatedly kicked with combat boots and whipped with television cable wire, and the wounds on her feet were caused by a metal pipe. She said she was denied food and forced to urinate on the floor.

The Dundee couple, when questioned by detectives, said her injuries and condition were self-inflicted.

Melissa and Kris Peters were charged with aggravated child abuse and neglect of a child, but prosecutors agreed to drop the first charge against Melissa Peters in exchange for her plea and testimony against her husband, court records show.

State Attorney Brian Haas said continued investigation into the case following the couple’s arrests led authorities to believe she wasn’t primarily responsible for the girl’s condition.

“We have reason to believe that Kris Peters is the most culpable here for the treatment of this girl,” he said, “and it’s our intention to hold him responsible. We don’t want to minimize her involvement, but it’s clear to us now that Kris Peters is the one who needs to go to prison.”

Haas said Melissa Peters, in her sworn statement to prosecutors, corroborated the victim’s testimony about the events that led to the girl’s injuries.

“We believe the two statements, combined, will lead to a conviction against Kris Peters in this case,” he said.

Kris Peters is scheduled for a pretrial conference Feb. 27.
