A man has appeared in court charged with poisoning and murdering four young men.

Stephen Port, 40, is accused of killing the men, who he allegedly contacted online via gay websites, between June 2014 and September this year.

Prosecutors told Barkingside magistrates he gave the men large amounts of the drug GHB.

The charges relate to the deaths of:

  • Anthony Patrick Walgate, 23, from Barnet, who was pronounced dead on Cooke Street on 19 June 2014
  • Gabriel Kovari, 22, from Lewisham, whose body was found near the churchyard of St Margaret's Church, North Street, Barking, on 28 August 2014
  • Jack Taylor, 25, from Dagenham, whose body was found near the Abbey Ruins close to North Street on 14 September this year
  • Daniel Whitworth, 21, from Gravesend, Kent, whose body was also found near the same churchyard on 20 September 2014

The deaths were not initially linked, but after further investigation they were referred to the Metropolitan Police homicide and major crime command.

There is a map showing how close together the find-sites were. Beggars belief that they were not linked initially, but maybe some of the young men were not open about their sexuality.

Oh, and there is a photograph of the suspect, as well. He looks about the age of the victims.....

I'm thinking the dog walker might be changing his route, after having discovered two of the four victims. :nailbiting:

I only saw two of the victims but Stephen Port most definitely has that creepy vibe about him. :hungry:

Who says he didn't change his route after finding the first one? :angelic:
Good point. I just assumed, by clicking on the pics & it showing the same location with the image caption saying, "Two of the victims were found near St Margaret's Church in Barking." :nailbiting: Either way, that would suck.

Ahhhh, wow ok. Jeez, anybody within the vicinity could've happened upon two bodies, it seems. Crazy.

Thanks for the map!

I suspect the dogwalker in question is an early riser and that is why he (or she) has found two of the victims.....

A man accused of poisoning and murdering four men in east London will now enter his plea in court in April.

Stephen Port, 40, of Barking, allegedly met the men on gay websites and invited them home where he is said to have poisoned them with the party drug GHB.

The men, in their 20s, were found in or near a churchyard in east London.

At Kingston Crown Court a judge extended his custody after being told a "large amount of outstanding work" was causing delay.

Mr Port, of Cooke Street, is charged with four counts of murder and four counts of administering a poison with intent to endanger life or inflict grievous bodily harm.

He was due to enter his plea on Friday but this has been pushed back to 15 April when he will appear at the Old Bailey. A provisional trial date was fixed for October.

Prosecutor William Emlyn-Jones said: "There is a very large amount of outstanding work given the scale of this inquiry."

Mr Justice Singh extended the custody time limit for Mr Port saying: "Given the unusual circumstances of this case I'm satisfied the criteria for extending custody is met in this case."

Oh happy day. Glad they caught this creep before he could take any more lives. I mean what is his malfunction? I wonder if he is secretly gay and can't handle it so this is what he does to the guys after their tryst to absolve himself of guilt? This is so interesting in a fucked up sociological kinda way.

This guy is fucked...I feel sorry for people that use ' mood enhancing drugs' for sex...any...even alcohol. Sex is natural...feels good without drugs. Get over your hangups...get naked and fuck.

Not to speak ill of the dead, but this one guy could eat berries through a picket fence, I don't think I'd want his teeth anywhere near my junk if I were a gay man:eek:

A man accused of murdering four men in east London has also been charged with poisoning, rape and sexual assault.

Stephen Port was charged with four counts of murder last year but the new allegations relate to eight living complainants.

The 41-year-old from Barking denied the charges during a pre trial hearing at the Old Bailey.

He was originally charged with four counts of murder and four of administering a poison, but at the Old Bailey on Monday prosecutors added six more counts of administering a poison, seven charges of rape and four of sexual assault.

Mr Port now also faces four alternative charges of manslaughter.

A chef murdered four men he met on gay networking sites by giving them a fatal dose of the drug GHB, a jury has heard.

Stephen Port allegedly plied them with the drug at his home in east London so he could have sex with his victims while they were unconscious.

The Old Bailey was told the 41-year-old left their bodies in or near a churchyard and planted suicide notes and fake bottles of the drug on them.

He denies 29 charges, including four murders and seven rapes.

The offences are in connection with attacks on 12 men over three-and-a-half years.

Prosecutor Jonathan Rees QC said the defendant was attracted to smaller, boyish men he referred to as "twinks" who he would invite to his one-bed flat on Cooke Street in Barking.

The jury heard the accused lied to police about his involvement with the dead men. The bodies of all four victims were found near on in a churchyard about 400m from Mr Port's home.

The prosecutor said the victims died soon after being invited to the accused's flat and three of them had GHB bottles "planted" on their bodies, with evidence of them being dragged to the spot where their bodies were found and "propped up in a sitting position".

The court also heard Mr Port had made "lots of money" working as a male escort.

He met his first alleged rape victim in February 2012. The jury heard the 19-year-old was given red wine who later woke up to find himself naked with the accused having sex with him.

The court heard the next rape victim, in June 2014, was a Muslim man who does not drink or take drugs. He was "knocked out" by a cup of liquid and woke up lying naked on the floor, the trial heard.

Mr Port helped him to Barking station, where he collapsed. The accused told police they had both taken drugs.

Three weeks later the chef allegedly killed Mr Walgate and called 999 anonymously.

[doublepost=1479979704,1475694243][/doublepost]Long article, worth reading. The police might have stopped him earlier, but for what was likely prejudice towards gay men......

I would have sworn this was here, but search is giving me no hits on the names or locations.

This is special coverage of the murder of 4 young men under circumstances so similar that the cops should have immediately picked up on the connection. They had the killer's DNA from the beginning, but failed to test DNA from 3 subsequent victims. I'm sure if the victims had been hetero women the case would have been resolved much earlier.

Wow... just, wow. The incompetence here by police is shocking.

How could so many bodies fitting the exact same profile be found in the exact same place without raising any kind of suspicion? The only way that would make any kind of sense is if they were regularly finding OD'd men all over the city. But to have 3 all at the church, in essentially the same exact set up, and no raised eyebrows... Utterly inexcusable.

Even the "suicide note" reads wonky. Did they find a pen with the body?? Because it certainly sounds like the killer wrote the note and put it into a protective plastic sheet while still at home. But the note was written as if it were completed at the church. Was there even a writing utensil on the scene to make that viable?

I'd be raising hell if I was the victims' family. Not that it will give them their loved ones back at this point, but something more should be done.

That was a very thorough well written article. I've read much about this case recently. This article brought it all together. The police have a lot to answer to. What death doesn't result in DNA testing and thorough examination to rule out everything to come to an accurate conclusion.

The third victim, found in the exact same spot as victim two, was sitting on a blue bedsheet spattered with Port's semen, and they had taken his DNA after the first death. That really blew my mind to read they tested nothing! Who carefully puts their suicide note in a plastic sleeve inside their shirt? Not even a check for fingerprints. I have to believe there's bias, elsewise the crime victims of Barking have no hope of justice.

You are so right. Not only that...but as an investigator...I would have surmised that with the position of the body...the shirt raised as if he'd been dragged as has been mentioned...that the blue sheet was used just for that purpose. The killer learned the first time how difficult it is to move all that dead weight so used the blue bed sheet the next time to make it easier. That police force are a bunch of lazy asses if you ask me.

Families of serial killer Stephen Port's victims have been told a report into the Met Police's initial response to the four deaths "will be damning", according to solicitors.

Lawyers representing the families met the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) ahead of a report due to be sent to the Met by May.

They said findings included "multiple failures" and "missed opportunities".

The Met Police said it would be "inappropriate to comment".

The actions of 17 police officers are under review by the IOPC - seven of whom could be sacked if found guilty of gross misconduct.

An investigation by the BBC revealed flaws in the evidence given by police at the original inquests for Mr Whitworth and Mr Kovari.

In November the High Court quashed the outcomes of Mr Whitworth and Mr Kovari's inquests, meaning inquests into the deaths of all four victims can be held together.
